This is advanced technical work in system management, system support and in maintaining system performance.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Attainment of a minimum of a bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university in computer science or a closely related field and a minimum of three years experience performing operating system maintenance and support and troubleshooting end user operating system hardware and software; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK: Good knowledge of current techniques and capabilities of a large scale operating system; good knowledge of materials and tools used in operating system and file system maintenance and repair work; good knowledge of methods used to modify and enhance information system operations; good knowledge of specialized system maintenance to monitor and maintain hardware and software to assure continuous operations; ability to diagnose system problems and develop solutions; ability to configure and upgrade operating systems and databases; ability to provide technical guidance for implementation and verification of a disaster recovery plan; ability to support application activities requiring specialized system programming; ability to evaluate, install and test software; ability to monitor computer systems and provide support for Help Desk resolutions; ability to perform daily file system maintenance, system backups and database archives, ability to perform backup of all temporary files and posted files; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department heads and other employees with varying technical abilities.

Description

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Assures the continuous operation of the user community by continuous monitoring of the operation and maintenance of all departmental hardware, software and servers; maintains, monitors, and adjusts the system for optimal performance; upgrades and installs various system hardware and software; provides technical guidance in designing and implementing new system modifications and enhancements to improve current information system operations; defines development tools and procedures for daily operational support; performs daily file system maintenance, system backups and database archives; performs backup and removal of all temporary files and posted files; investigates system errors; resolves problems; provides technical guidance for the implementation of a disaster recovery plan and assist with disaster recovery; handles print file management, creates system user logins, monitors console messages and provides support for Help Desk resolutions; manages hardware and support contracts and support calls, attends appropriate system management classes offered by the hardware vendor; performs related work as required.

Important Information

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: An employee in this class is responsible for providing specialized support work in managing and maintaining the operating systems, file system maintenance, servers, and computer workstations using, terminal emulation software, various database programs and other software packages. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures under the general supervision of a designated superior and supervision is not exercised over other employees.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION: Eligibles selected for appointment must meet the established medical and physical standards for the class of work. The medical examination must be by one of the physicians designated by the Personnel Board. Appointees must bear the cost of the examination.

The Mobile County Personnel Department reserves the right to limit the number of applicants summoned for interview. In such instances, a preliminary appraisal of qualifications, as indicated by the completed application, will be utilized as a guide in the selection of candidates to be summoned.

A “Practice Test Seminar” is held in the Personnel Department Office, 1809 Government Street, Mobile, Alabama, at 9:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. The purpose of these seminars is to acquaint applicants or interested citizens with design format and procedures utilized by the department in its administration of written test selection devices. Inasmuch as testing facilities are limited, the seminars will be on a first come, first served basis, as long as space remains available.
