This includes providing detailed, unbiased reports regarding the findings of investigations. The Investigator will be expected to act as an impartial party in conducting and documenting prompt, thorough and sensitive investigations. This position reports to the Managing Director of the Office of Institutional Equity/Title IX Coordinator.
Duties and Responsibilities
Intake, analysis and documentation of initial complaints of sexual misconduct, harassment and/or discrimination.
Independently develop investigation plans including determining appropriate interviews, evidence collection methodologies, relevant policies/laws and timeline.
Investigations will minimally include: acting as an impartial fact finder, contacting parties and providing information about the University policy and investigatory process, interviewing complainant, respondent, and potential witnesses, gathering all relevant documentation, keeping detailed, consistent, and accurate records, maintaining communication with parties and ensuring University policy and procedures are followed throughout the entire process.
Draft high quality investigative reports including analysis of facts and findings and interpretation of relevant policies, regulations, and/or laws.
Maintain statistics and reports for compliance purposes in spreadsheets and databases.
Implement and keep apprised of new developments and best practices in investigation procedures.
Work collaboratively with colleagues and campus partners to provide education, training, and outreach related to MSU Policy, Title IX and VAWA and ensure training meets all legal requirements.
Work to build a culture of active respect and concern for all members of the MSU community.
Implement interim measures and other intervention and support measures for involved parties.
Assist in development of protocols, procedures, and policies.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in relevant field.
Demonstrated experience in analytical writing, writing complex plans, and/or project management.
Demonstrated experience working with people during high conflict situations such as employee/labor relations, student discipline, and/or law enforcement proceedings.
Demonstrated experience working with highly sensitive information and addressing the needs of a diverse community on sensitive topics in a complex organization.
Experience with the development and delivery of trainings.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Prior experience in equal opportunity or affirmative action programs, civil rights, or employment law.
Prior completion of sexual violence prevention and/or response training through a nationally recognized organization (please include date of training, and organization).
Experience conducting administrative investigations of discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct, interpersonal violence, stalking, related retaliation complaints, or administrative policies.
Experience working with diverse populations in higher education, civil rights agency, or equally complex organization.
Bachelor’s degree in counseling, psychology, criminal justice, human resources, or related field.
J.D., M.S.W, or advanced degree in a related field.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
- This position requires work during non-traditional hours and travel as needed.
- An example of a writing sample is one that contains analysis of facts demonstrating their ability to write reports. For attorneys, a briefing is sufficient. For police, reports are sufficient. For higher ed. professionals, a previously written investigative doc is sufficient. Each may be redacted as necessary to comply with relevant laws regarding the document and privacy.
