Nurse Practitioner-Charlestown Mental Health (Part Time!!!)

*** This is part-time position and open to between 20 to 40 hours per week to be discussed during the interview ***


Provides care to a panel of short- and long-term patients in Counseling & Behavioral Services. Care may be provided in person or through telehealth technology.


Clinical responsibilities:

Provides direct psychiatric care to a select patient population in collaboration with the physician, including diagnosis, treatment planning, care coordination, supportive therapy and psychopharmacology.


Performs and records the patient history and physical exam.


Utilizes advanced nursing knowledge to identify, prevent or solve complex and/or recurring patient care problems.


Follows and manages psychiatric care of patients enhancing continuity of care.


Provides crises counseling and emergency management as indicated.


Collaborates with unit staff and physicians to facilitate a comprehensive plan of care and coordinate resources as requested.


Writes orders which are in accord with current guidelines.


Monitors patient outcomes in accordance with defined standards of patient care.


Identifies system-wide factors contributing to undesirable outcomes, such as complications, increased length of stay and overutilization of services.


Documents patient visit within 48 hours of visit.


Seeks physician and nursing consultation as indicated.


Departmental responsibilities:


Participates in the development of formal and informal educational programs for the department-based nursing staff as requested. Develops educational programs within area of expertise.


Provides clinical precepting for NP students as requested.


Collaborates with nurse managers, clinical nurses and medical staff to plan, implement and evaluate pertinent change in practice and health care delivery.


Facilitates patient movement through the system and efficient use of resources through interdepartmental collaboration.


Coordinates coverage for time off unit, time off, and off-hours.


Participates in orientation of new staff members.


Professional responsibilities:


Responsible for own professional growth and maintenance of required credentials.


Identifies own learning needs and goals.


Takes responsibilities for leadership and participation on committees.


Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current health care practice/research.


Supports research efforts to advance knowledge and to promote research-based practice.


Evaluates own practice and program effectiveness.


Identifies pertinent nursing and health delivery problems for investigation.


Evaluates current research findings for clinical specialty and applies to practice as appropriate.


Maintains current CPR certification.


Maintains an awareness of pertinent developments in the profession and in clinical practice.


Participates in at least one committee on an annual basis.


Attends at least two MGH-offered learning workshop/training annually


Assumes any other tasks as delegated.


Skills/Abilities/Competencies

Strong documentation skills in an electronic medical record


A registered nurse who has attained a master’s degree in Nursing from an accredited program, and is certified by the ANCC or AANP to practice in the expanded role of nurse practitioner.

A minimum of two years nursing experience with specific populations.

Current, active professional licensure to practice in an expanded nursing role in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Spanish language skills are helpful, but not essential.

Must have a telephone.
