What You Will Do:

• Provide a quality and responsive waste management service for the decommissioning and environmental remediation projects to secure compliant disposal of waste packaging and manifesting
• Assist in preparation of draft reports, including safety analyses, assessment, regulatory documents, waste acceptance criteria, technical reports, or other documents
• Ensure project safety and regulatory documentation is complete, accurate, and reliable for submission to regulators or other Department of Energy (DOE) offices
• Provide detailed technical oversight and support to prevent programmatic failure due to, for example, failure to comply with regulations or nuclear safety requirements
• Provide authoritative advice for internal and external stakeholders
• Carry out timely investigation of events as required and identify improvements
• Support the development and implementation of plans to mitigate programmatic risks and exploit opportunities for improving program activities
• Contribute to the effective development and delivery of training within own area of specialty
• Design, delivery and evaluation of training, acting as coach and mentor
• Support proposals for new works involving waste management
• On-site assessments related to waste management programs
• Provide expert opinion and feedback at critical points in program/project activities.
• Interfacing with a diverse range of people from the DOE (EM, NE, OS) and other government organization (Department of Defense (NAVSEA, NAVFAC), Army Core of Engineers, DOE Contractors, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, State Regulators, and other stakeholders.
• Assist with proactively identifying potential risks/opportunities through review of the programs and evaluation of program elements related to nuclear facility operations, and TRU, TRU mixed, and low level/mixed low-level waste management.

What You Will Need (Minimum Job Requirements):

• Knowledge of environmental issues including practices, policies, legislation, and stakeholders relating to radioactive and non-radioactive waste management
• Knowledge of national TRU program and compliance with waste acceptance criteria (WAC) for shipment of TRU waste to the Waste Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP)
• Experience in developing waste inventories together with records management
• Experience with waste characterization
• Experience with waste manifesting
• Experience with DOT transportation (truck and rail) interfaces
• Experience with final disposal of waste at Waste Control Specialists, Clive, and/or US Ecology
• Familiarity with US environmental laws and regulations
• DOE Licensing and/or Environmental Report development experience
• Familiarity with waste characterization at DOE and other government organization sites
• Excellent writing skills for complex environmental report preparation
• Experience managing and leading technical staff in adherence to schedule, cost and quality requirements
• Ability to communicate effectively with audiences that include but are not limited to management, coworkers, clients, vendors, contractors, and other stakeholders
• Education - Accredited four (4) year degree or global equivalent in applicable engineering or environmental field of study and ten (10) years of work-related experience
• Clearance Requirements - Maintain ability to obtain a Q or L clearance, current clearance not required
• Citizenship - US Citizenship Required
• Work Schedule - Normal 40 hours per week, with occasional overtime required
• Travel - This position is remote with project travel as required

Preferred:

• Waste Management experience at New Mexico laboratory or waste sites
• Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico or Oak Ridge/Knoxville, Tennessee or Pittsburg, Pennsylvania
• Experience with projects that include both radioactive and non-radioactive wastes
