TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN II
ST. CHARLES COUNTY HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT
Starting Salary: $46,242.36 - $57,443.92 per year
This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position which includes a full range of benefits including Paid Time Off, Extended Medical Leave, Holidays, Employee health, dental, life, disability, retirement and tuition assistance programs.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Performs the repair, maintenance, and installation of traffic signal systems, roadway lighting, and communications equipment; inspects the installation of traffic signal systems; performs the collection of and assists with the evaluation of various traffic engineering studies; on-call 24 hours a day to provide traffic control assistance in emergencies such as traffic accidents or natural disasters; operates snowplow and salt spreader as needed for snow removal; performs other duties as assigned. All work performed under moderate supervision.
- Responds to emergency calls, such as malfunctioning equipment and traffic crashes involving equipment for signals, lighting, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), and communication systems, and takes appropriate action.
- Investigates and responds to customer service reports with regard to signal and lighting operations and other electronic/electrical traffic control devices.
- Schedules and checks the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal equipment, radio communication equipment, ITS, roadway lighting, and other electronic/electrical traffic control devices.
- Provides training to employees on safety, fleet equipment, technical procedures, and related topics.
- Provides expertise in signal, lighting, or other electronic/electrical traffic control devices during construction project development and implementation.
- Reads and interprets signal circuit plans and schematics for trouble shooting problems with electronic/electrical components.
- Serves as lead in utilizing software to communicate with and program electronic traffic control devices and radio communication equipment.
- Attends contract meetings and oversees the inspection of contracts regarding signal and lighting equipment or other electronic/electrical traffic control devices.
- Performs advanced installation, repair and trouble shooting of communication devices, including fiber networks, wireless devices, and radios.
- Makes recommendations regarding equipment and material needs, maintains inventory of electronic/electrical parts and supplies, and orders or purchases replacement parts.
- Ensures completion of the department's signal and lighting preventive maintenance program.
- Maintains required records and documentation on the installation, maintenance, repair, or replacement of signals, lighting, and communication equipment.
- Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Education
- General/technical high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Certifications
- A valid class A commercial driver’s license w/air brake endorsement.
- Job Experience
- Three years of experience in signal and/or radio maintenance as a Traffic Signal Technician I or equivalent.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of all applicable standards and procedures for job tasks.
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Must have and obtain a valid Driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
- Must be certified as an International Municipal Signal Association Level II Signal Technician, or be able to obtain such certifications within one year of hire.
- Must have a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement required or must be able to obtain within 30 days of appointment.
- Working knowledge of the hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of specialized signal equipment.
- Must hold certifications in Work Zone Safety or be able to obtain within 1 year.
