Overview: Under general supervision, a Student Success Navigator fosters the student's sense of responsibility for his/her academic progress, assists the student in obtaining accurate information about educational and career options, academic requirements, policies and procedures. Directs the student in developing achievable career and educational goals including the creation of an individual plan to track progress toward goal achievement. Fosters the student's sense of responsibility for their academic progress. Creates a welcoming environment, which assists students in developing connection to the SFCC community. Demonstrates commitment to working with a diverse student population. Creates a student-centered academic environment. Demonstrates the mission and core values of SFCC while representing the college professionally. Understands and applies college policies and regulations in appropriate situations. The Student Success Navigator will advise students within Health Sciences.
Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills
A Student Success Navigator will consistently apply the policies and procedures of State Fair Community College, learn requirements toward completion of program assigned degrees & certificates and understand transfer issues and concerns, utilize excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communication and presentation skills. Duties include:
- Advocate to undecided students in obtaining resources to support career planning and decision-making.
- Responsible for integrating the student's composite academic knowledge into a holistic experience and assist with application of concepts to concrete applications.
- Teach the use of academic technology for student tracking, enrollment & registration. Instruct students through various self-service programs such as Starfish, mySFCC, Canvas, and Degree Works. Assist students in resolving technology issues.
- Assist students with evaluating their personal circumstance when determining course load.
- Determine, and then conduct appropriate follow-up activities to promote retention and completion (flags, referrals, kudo's and To-Do, outreach, enrollment push).
- Identify at-risk students and determine appropriate referrals to on and off-campus resources.
- Coordinate appeals processes, including but not limited to financial aid, academic standing, and prerequisite courses.
- Advocate and guide transfer students to develop/evaluate criteria to select transfer institutions, and assist them through the transfer process.
- Advocate and guide technical students in preparation for career entry.
- Participate in events such as program-specific orientation, college orientation, and select recruitment events on campus.
- Develop success plan/strategy for students on academic probation.
- Interpret, develop, and implement college policies and practices in response to identified student concerns.
- Responsible for providing consultation and recommendation to administration, faculty, staff and students.
- Liaison with financial aid and other Student Services offices to provide explanation to students, as well as next steps to take with regard to individual circumstances.
- When provided departmental goals, work collaboratively and independently to determine and implement strategies to meet the goal.
- Direct students in enrollment activities, leading to goal completion. Navigator caseloads may include 315+ students for whom individual academic degree plans are created. Promote co-curricular activities and leadership development to build student brand and marketability. Teach student how to develop networks and leverage them for building their brand. Guide students through developmental milestones; determine and implement appropriate interventions.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements
Required Qualifications –
- Computer skills including word processing, email, internet, and basic spreadsheet skills.
- Ability to achieve goals, plan and implement programs with little supervision.
- Improve and promote student success academically, personally and professionally.
- Participate in faculty and college committee activities.
- Be able to efficiently work as a team member with faculty and staff.
- Maintain and update advisee records as necessary, utilize campus technology effectively to support student enrollment.

Preferred Qualifications - _*Knowledge of learning theory, student development theory, counseling methods, crisis intervention, goal setting, conflict resolution, ADA knowledge, and campus and community referral resources preferred. General FAFSA knowledge as well as an understanding of how course enrollment affects eligibility for Title IV funding preferred.
Experience – Experience working in higher education in academic advising/retention services as well as demonstrated experience working with college students preferred. Human services and/or customer service background required. Experience working on a Student Information System and other academic technology (such as an LMS, Early Alert system, Degree Audit software) is preferred.
Education – Bachelor's Degree Required, as the navigator needs to have a comprehensive understanding of undergraduate educational processes and requirements, including transfer. Psychology, communications, education, or related degree preferred.
