About the opportunity:
SWCA Environmental Consultants is looking for a Staff-Level Biologist* to support projects throughout Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming, reporting to our Broomfield or Fort Collins, Colorado office. This region offers a unique work environment supporting a variety of industries including renewable energy, transmission, and oil and gas clients. These are hourly, regular (with benefits), full-time positions.

  • The successful candidate’s job title will more accurately reflect their specific areas of focus and experience, such as Natural Resources Technician, Assistant Staff Biologist, Assistant Staff Environmental Scientist, Staff Biologist, or Staff Environmental Scientist.

Technicians typically are entry level positions. Assistant staff positions typically have a few months to one year of relevant industry experience and expertise. Staff positions typically have up to two years of relevant industry experience and expertise.
What you will accomplish:
This position will assist with a variety of natural resource field studies, including threatened/endangered species assessments, avian/wildlife surveys, botanical surveys, wetland delineations, and soil surveys. It is expected that, for the majority of time during the first year or so in the position, the candidate will prepare and conduct fieldwork. It is hoped that, over time and depending upon individual performance, the candidate will perform more office-based tasks after that, such as technical writing and data management/analysis.

Primary Duties Include:
  • Complete natural resource field surveys
  • Conduct avian field studies primarily on pre-construction wind development projects, assist with vegetation and habitat surveys, threatened/endangered species assessments, and other avian/wildlife surveys.
  • Conduct construction monitoring, wildlife and vegetation baseline studies (including protocol surveys), nesting bird surveys, and general habitat assessments.
  • Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, survey points, habitat types, and associated landforms.
  • Conduct fieldwork and operate 4WD and off-road vehicles in all terrain and weather conditions.
  • Record data on field site forms or in digital tablets, organize and transfer field data, and help support project management team.
  • Organize and assist with QA/QC and analysis of field data
  • Assist with completion of technical reports
  • Use GIS applications, including ArcGIS Field Maps and ArcGIS Online to complete data collection in the field
  • Safely operate 4-wheel drive vehicles and/or ATVs/UTVs to access remote locations
  • Perform a broad range of tasks related to a variety of wildlife, plant, and aquatic resources
  • Troubleshoots routine problems with oversight

Experience and qualifications for success:

Required qualifications:

  • Ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather and rugged terrain
  • Ability to travel to projects throughout the continental U.S., primarily in CO, NM, WY, UT, NV.
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to travel up to 95% of time with the option to travel home as needed.
  • Ability to use or learn digital tablet for GPS navigation and recording of field data required.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to drive a 4WD vehicle on backcountry roads required.
  • Ability to drive or learn to drive ATVs, UTVS, and other off-road vehicles and haul trailers required.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new survey and monitoring techniques and protocols.
  • Ability to take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to assure tasks are completed in the most effective manner.
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn company operational and safety procedures
  • Ability to work as member of a team and individually to make decisions and complete tasks in the most effective manner required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Associate’s degree or in pursuit of a Bachelor's or Associate’s degree in biology, ecology, or a related field.
  • Prior experience completing environmental field-based work.
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following:
    • Avian species identification (sight and sound)
    • Wildlife surveys
    • Plant species identification (grasses, forbs, succulents)
    • Wetland delineations
  • Experience technical writing
  • Knowledge of Federal and State environmental regulations

An employee in this Denver, CO - based position can expect a hourly rate of: Natural Resources Technician - $19.43/hour to 25.73/hour; Assistant Staff Biologist - $21.53/hour to $27.83/hour; Staff Biologist - $24.15/hour to $31.50/hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.
