Position Details
The Shelter Advocate will provide comprehensive trauma informed and survivor centered services to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and other violent crimes. Under the leadership of the Shelter Supervisor, the Advocate will provide case management, housing advocacy, immediate shelter and related supportive services, and emotional support to all shelter residents. The Shelter Advocate will also provide follow up services with residents who have transitioned out of Shelter. In addition, the Shelter Advocate will provide emotional support and crisis intervention to callers on the 24-hour crisis line. The Shelter Advocate will need to have a flexible schedule that will include working some nights, weekends, and holidays. The Shelter Advocate will participate in the 24 hour in-call shelter back up rotation.
Position Specifics
- 1st shift - Friday, Saturday, Sunday 7am-3pm
- The position is part of the shelter back up on-call rotation
- Starting pay is $16.83/hour
- This position is located in Davenport, Iowa
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Financial
- Meets or exceeds budgeted financial expectations for the program.
- Will seek prior approval and work with the direct supervisor for any purchases that need to be made.
- Submit all receipts within 24 hours of purchase.
- Provides timesheet documentation for all funding sources related to the position.
Operations
- Takes initiative in problem solving and utilizes resources such as team members and community resources to assist in addressing client/volunteer issues that arise.
- Ability to work flexible hours and willing to travel.
- Assist in maintaining shelter cleanliness and monitor for any potential maintenance issues.
- Demonstrated ability to organize time and efforts to meet support and advocacy work demands.
- Ability to be professional and represent the program in an appropriate and positive fashion.
- Inputs daily services into the data entry system by the noted deadline each week.
- Provide on call direct service on a pre-scheduled rotating basis with other staff members outside of normal office hours.
- Operate from the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS).
Client/External
- All Shelter Advocates will provide support and service management to shelter clients to assist with goal setting, advocacy, and referral.
- Complete intake forms with all new clients; orient clients to the shelter facility, services of the program and expectations of residents in shelter.
- Provide all new shelter residents with completed intake, orientation to shelter rules, and orientation to shelter facility.
- Provide emotional support and advocacy to shelter residents.
- Provide support and crisis intervention to crisis line callers.
- Provide crisis management and conflict resolution for clients.
- Ability to work in a caring and helping manner with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crimes.
- Provide short- and long-term culturally/linguistically appropriate services to promote the health, safety and well-being of survivors.
- Function effectively during tense mental & emotional situations.
People
- Participates in, at minimum, twice monthly individual supervisions with a direct supervisor.
- Creates positive, inclusive, safe, client-led and outcome-oriented culture.
- Serves as a public face of the Agency by interfacing with regulatory, community and funder leadership.
- Ensures that communication with outside parties is coordinated and effectively builds positive relationships.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. High school diploma required.
- Paid or volunteer human service experience preferred (with children, domestic violence and sexual assault victims preferred)
- Valid drivers’ license in good standing and vehicle with appropriate auto insurance required. Must be able to pass the motor vehicle record background check.
Must have current proof of car insurance, able to pass a driving background check, and have reliable transportation.
