Job Title: Senior Accountant

Salary Range: $92,000 to $96,500

Department: Administration

Status: Exempt

Job Reports To: Director of Finance (DOF)

Positions Supervised: None

Office Location: 555 Water Street, SW, Washington, DC 20024

Travel: Local travel in Washington, DC metro area.

Work Environment: Standard office environment

Equipment Used: PC/laptop, computer printer, office copier, telephone, facsimile machine, shredder.

Job Summary: This position assists the Director of Finance with the day-to-day functions on financial and accounting functions of the organization. This position has a significant amount or relevant experiences and is expected to perform with a greater amount of independence. The Senior Accountant will have experience with maintaining the general ledger, budgets, account reconciliations, accounts payables, cash management, financial reporting, and audit support.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Prepares all financial reports to include Statement of Activities, Monthly Financial Reports, and Monthly Investment Schedules.
  • Review monthly investment statements.
  • Post entries to the general ledger monthly for prepaid expenses, monthly accruals, investment gain/losses, rents, insurances, loans, and other monthly entries.
  • Maintain inventory schedule for capital purchases over $1,000.
  • Post bank deposits, ACH deposits, ACH withdrawals, and misc. credits and debits to the general ledger.
  • Reconcile banking transactions daily and perform monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Assist with budget preparation.
  • Review accounts payable transactions weekly.
  • Process payroll biweekly, prepare payroll journal, and other payroll reports.
  • Monitor leave accrual, use and balances reports.
  • Support HR functions in the payroll systems, such as benefit information, garnishments, etc.
  • Review quarterly tax deposits, yearly W-2s, 1099s, and 1096 submitted to the IRS.
  • Post monthly credit card expenses to the general ledger.
  • Works with DOF to properly code, monitor and report on individual programs and the organization as a whole.
  • Prepare audit work papers and schedules as required.
  • Assists auditors with their various requests during the audit.
  • Assists the DOF and CEO with financial requests as needed.
  • Performs other duties as requested

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or other business-related degree with a minimum of 24 credit hours in accounting.
  • 5 – 10 years of related work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with and a good understanding of typical financial reports, bank reconciliations, journals, and audit processes.
  • Solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • A high level of integrity, accuracy, dependability, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and ability to prepare clear financial reports
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint), and QuickBooks
  • Ability to meet deadlines with quality results.
  • Excellent communication skills.
