Ropes Course Facilitator

Crossnore Communities for Children seeks part-time Ropes Course Facilitators at its Winston-Salem campus. As part of the Miracle Heights Adventures team, duties include set up and operations of low and high elements on the ropes course. Facilitators will guide groups through safety demonstrations, briefing and debriefing activities, and processing group development as part of the overall program.
Hiring Range: $17/hour

Pre-Hire Requirements
  • Must successfully complete extensive background checks, interviews, and pre-hire drug screen
  • There is a weight limit of 250 pounds for all high ropes elements.
  • The physical ability to work at heights up to 40’ for extended periods of time.
  • Crossnore Communities for Children is requiring new hires (excluding those with an approved medical or religious exemption) to be vaccinated for COVID 19 as a condition of employment to help ensure the safety of all employees, youth and families served.

REPORTS TO: Director of Experiential Learning

SUMMARY: To assist the Director of Experiential Learning with external groups on the ropes course

STATUS: Part Time, PRN
PAY SCALE: $17.50/hour
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience
  • Current certification or documentation of training to facilitate groups on low and high elements or willingness to be trained.
  • Previous work experience as a guide/facilitator
Skills/Competencies
  • Knowledge of group dynamics and facilitation techniques
  • Appropriate safety and rescue training; certifications in CPR and First Aid preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to operate well in crisis situations and knowledge of cultural issues that can affect care
  • Ability to work on diverse teams
  • Good interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated passion for serving children and the child-serving workforce
  • Ability to laugh, be creative and have willingness to make and learn from mistakes

  • Ensure the provision of quality services through participation in Crossnore Communities for Children Performance Quality Improvement (PQI).
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Staff will set up and operate low and high elements of the ropes course including activities such as, but not limited to: explaining safety gear and assisting guests in properly adjusting gear; providing instructions on the safe use of course equipment; monitoring guests safety while on or around the course, including entrance and exit; communicating effectively with guide team and guests; facilitating briefing and debriefing of initiatives or activities and processing group development as part of the overall program.
  • Follow all safety procedures and adhere to Local Operating Procedures.
  • Ensure all adventure equipment is in working order by completing cursory inspections and reporting any need for replacement or repair.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the philosophy, outcomes, and goals of adventure learning.
  • Staff must provide culturally responsive facilitation while working with diverse groups and teams.
  • Make safe and skilled decisions, often under pressure, to assist with rescues and other incidents.
  • Setup, run, and debrief a variety of ground-based activities and initiatives.
  • Document groups accurately, track paperwork, and use appropriate forms, including incident reports.
  • Gain an understanding and knowledge of group development models and processing techniques to further assist with debriefing of activities and initiatives.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be subjected to outside conditions, including weather and insects. There is occasionally exposure to fumes or airborne particles and harsh chemicals. Noise level in the workplace is usually moderate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS - Heavy
  • Position involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Frequent ability to reach with hands, arms, and fingers to handle or free objects using tools or controls
  • Frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Ability to spend long periods of time standing, bending, stooping, and walking around the facility
  • Visual ability including distance, peripheral, and depth perception.
  • Regularly required to talk and hear.
  • Able to climb stairs repeatedly.
  • The physical ability to work at heights up to 40’ for extended periods of time.
  • The physical ability to tolerate required personal protective equipment such as closed-toe shoes, work gloves, ear protection, dust masks, safety belts and safety shoes on a continuous basis.
