Summary of Position

Paramedics works no more than 999 hours per year - under general direction of the Fire Lieutenant. This is a highly responsible professional position that performs a combination of both duties in the areas of firefighting and emergency medical services.

Scope of Supervision

Works under the general direction of the Fire Lieutenant.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

· Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

· Knowledge of pre-hospital patient-care for advanced and basic life support.

· Ability to communicate both orally and in writing, ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

· Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with employees and management.

· Ability to think clearly and use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations which may occur. Good physical condition and the ability to perform job functions.

· Ability to frequently lift and carry heavy weights, climb, walk, run, drive vehicles, crawl, stoop, push, pull, jump, , grasp and manipulate small objects, work on unsteady footing and use other emergency equipment as required.

· Ability to operate a variety of medical equipment including suction units, pulse oxymeters, laryngoscopes, cardiac monitors, defibrillators, oxygen administration equipment, pneumatic anti-shock garment (PASG) and glucose monitors.

· Ability to use appropriate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

· Ability to provide good customer service under normal and intense circumstances.

· Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

· Ability to operate medical diagnostic and procedural equipment.

· Skilled in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and custom records management software.

· Skilled in life saving and firefighting techniques and methods.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be 18 years of age. Must hold a valid Texas Driver’s License. Must be a U.S. Citizen. Mustpossess a high school diploma or GED and the following qualifications:

  • Must have a current Texas Paramedic License/Certificate issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Work Environment

Continuous outdoor and indoor activity, frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body,

climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, toxic waste/material

hazards, etiological agents, violent situations, and communicable diseases. Occasional kneeling, crawling, carrying

up to 100 pounds, lifting up to 100 pounds. Possibility of exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, materials and

inclement weather while in the field.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Assists in the removal of victims from dangerous situations.

· Provides basic and/or advanced life support and firefighting work in the treatment of the sick or injured and firefighting duties in preventing, combating, and extinguishing fires along with water and other rescue related duties.

· Provides first aid and basic and/or advanced life support at emergency scenes.

· Prepares complete records, medical charts and reports related to fire, emergency medical care and vehicle operations provided during operational periods.

· Communicates with doctors, nurses, and other allied health care personnel.

· Deals with a high level of stress and makes split second decisions.

· Responds to emergency medical calls.

· Applies electrocardiogram and interprets findings, performs cardiac defibrillation, transthoracic pacing and synchronized cardioversion.

· Performs invasive procedures by intravenous infusion, endotracheal, nasal, and esophageal intubations.

· Identifies, calculates, and administers therapeutic drug dosages.

· Administers oxygen, splints fractures, bandages wounds, dresses burns, and assists in childbirth.

· Provides emotional care and support to the sick and injured while transporting them to the appropriate hospital.

· Participates in the exchange of information between off-going and on-coming shifts and in crew meetings as necessary.

· Checks all personal gear, assigned vehicles, equipment and tools to ensure safe and effective operation.

· Operates ambulances, and rescue units safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established policies and procedures.

· Maintains familiarity with box maps and related road networks within the fire district area and within those areas with Mutual Aid Response Agreements.

· Participates in all scheduled and assigned training classes.

· Communicates among assigned personnel, other employees throughout the city, upper management and the general public as necessitated by the position.

· Maintains vehicles and equipment.

· Allows for self-availability in order to work all shifts.

· Performs other job-related duties consistent with assigned division responsibilities.

· May perform other assignments and handle special projects as required.
