Job Summary

We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Duke Cancer Center located in Durham, NC to support our inpatient consult service. The APP will work collaboratively with physicians to provide patient care services by interdependently scheduling, supervising, and conducting diagnostic and therapeutic services and independently participating in the delivery of direct patient care within the scope of individual authority as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.


Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with designated physicians, evaluate and diagnose oncologic and medical problems, and prescribe necessary treatment and services for both new and established radiation oncology patients. Coordinate activities for Radiation Oncology team to ensure optimal quality patient care.


  • Perform complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to assist physician in diagnosing medical and surgical problems. (See clinical competencies below) Prescribe necessary treatment and services for quality patient care; record the normal and abnormal findings and tentative conclusions.


  • Deliver patient care services under physician supervision in the Radiation Oncology Department. This includes taking patient histories, conducting physical examinations, and recording the data in the patient’s record; writing progress notes; preparing patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings; obtaining psychosocial, medical, surgical, and oncologic history relevant to patient care, and developing therapeutic relationships with patients. Order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient. Consult with supervising/back up physicians as needed or when a patients’ progress fails to meet anticipated or pre-determined outcome.


  • Clinical Competencies: APP's may perform medical acts that have been agreed upon by the APP and supervising physician. Competency in medical acts will be validated by the supervising or back up supervising physician


  • Facilitate coordination and scheduling of laboratory studies, diagnostic or therapeutic procedures and consultations within Radiation Oncology. Explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic or therapeutic procedures to patients. Follow up on study results, communicate results as indicated. Refer patients when appropriate to other healthcare providers and/or community agencies to ensure coordination of patient care.


  • Develop and maintain therapeutic relationships with Radiation Oncology patients and family members. Provide patient and family education regarding the diagnosis, treatment plan and the risks, benefits, side effects and logistics of treatment. Monitor progress of patients, report progress to supervising physician, and maintain record of each patient's progress.


  • Participate in basic science and clinical research projects within Radiation Oncology including but not limited to direct patient care of patients enrolled in clinical trials, accrual, monitoring and follow up of such patients, participation in quality assurance and improvement activities. Assist in teaching students including nurse practitioner graduate students and residents in techniques and in the care of patients, which are unique to the Radiation Oncology clinical setting.


  • Prepare quality assurance reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.


  • Perform continual self-evaluation of professional development and maintain professional education and continuing education credits per requirements of the Nurse Practitioner Board of Nursing and / or NC Board of Medicine. Perform other professional duties related to the identified scope of practice.


Job Eligibility Requirements


Education

  • Nurse Practitioners: Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing.
  • Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred.


Certification

BLS certification required.


License

  • Nurse Practitioners: Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required prior to or within 6 months of employment.
  • Physician Assistants: Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.


Experience

1 + years of APP experience strongly preferred.


Job Hours

Primary hours will be Monday through Friday, day shift, with hours flexible to meet the needs of the patients. Four 10-hour shifts available, if desired.
