Position Summary Information

General Information
University Communications, the unit responsible for JMU’s social media and media relations functions, is hiring student multimedia design assistants for the 2023-24 school year. This internship is a paid student position that requires 10 hours each week. Class credit is also available. Office hours will be set according to the student’s availability. Interns will get the chance to work with other University Communications staff and interns with varying skills, build out their professional portfolios, and be paid to develop designed content for JMU’s digital channels.

Duties and Responsibilities
Multimedia Design Assistants will be primarily responsible for assisting in the creation of designed content for JMU’s channels. There will be a strong emphasis on graphic design, however, these interns will secondarily be responsible for other miscellaneous converged media tasks.

Multimedia Design Assistant responsibilities include:
  • Work closely with the Assistant Director of Multimedia Strategy to create branded graphics for JMU’s communications and social media properties
  • Utilize JMU’s brand guide and branded templates to develop themed designs to support University Communications
  • Design and produce multimedia frames and Stories for JMU’s Instagram and Facebook channels
  • Design and curate GIFs and GIF stickers for JMU’s GIPHY channel
  • Assist with social media video production
  • Participate in student-led social media content across JMU’s channels
  • Assist with other miscellaneous media production tasks within University Communications


Qualifications
We are looking for motivated SMAD or SADAH majors or minors, or any other students with a passion for graphic and multimedia design, to fill these positions, so long as they have a baseline proficiency with the technical aspects of creating digital content, as well as developing a digital audience. Other majors are welcome to apply. Applicants must be full-time James Madison University students for the entire 2023-2024 academic year.
Applicants must be proficient in the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro.) They should show advanced initiative, self-discipline, excellent interpersonal skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills. Other design proficiencies (i.e. illustration, motion graphics, etc.) are valued but not required.
A digital portfolio, or links to examples of the applicant’s work, is REQUIRED.

Conditions of Employment

Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
