The Medical Director is a leader in the agency and is responsible for shaping and defining the goals of the psychiatric department of Italian Home for Children as well as aligning these goals with the agency’s recently launched five-year strategic plan. The Medical Director is part of a passionate, dedicated, and talented multidisciplinary team who are changing the lives of children and families every day. The Medical Director has oversight of the mentoring and training of prescribers (both interns and employees) and nursing as well as performance management of the prescriber staff. The Medical Director provides some direct psychiatric treatment for clients of all ages as well as consultation across the agency which includes diverse programming of Partial Hospital Programming, therapeutic day school, Community Based Acute Treatment (CBAT), outpatient, group home, in home therapy, mentoring, and Applied Behavior Analysis. The Medical Director will commit to providing the highest quality of care to clients. The Medical Director will be team-oriented, collaborative, inspiring, and engaging and show interest in guiding early career multidisciplinary employees.

This is a part time position, this position is 15-20 hours per week no more no less and requires 10 of those hours minimum on site spread across minimum of two days

Essential Functions

Leadership and Administration

• Identify and execute strategic priorities for the psychiatry departments
• Organize departments to reflect regulatory compliance and sound fiscal management
• Engage with committee working on agency treatment philosophy
• Hire, train, and consult with new prescribers and interns/residents
• Build new internship programs for psychiatry
• Consult to all programs as dictated by regulatory standards as well as to further increase the quality of the programs, including crisis consultation as it arises
• Participate in admission decisions across programs as needed
• Ensure prescribers and nurses collaborate with community pediatric and psychiatric providers
• Provide training around evidence-based and best practice, including designing Grand Rounds
• Oversee that prescribers are responsible to licensure requirements and ethical codes
• Participate in establishing and implementing quality assurance activities as they relate to medication management and medical issues
• Maintain effective communication and collaborative work environment with other employees
• Reinvigorate system for peer review/audits of internal client charts
• Attend external meetings and activities as a representative of the organization
• Assist with review of all medical and psychopharmacologic policies, procedures, and protocols
• Participate in agency committees such as Wellness, Human Rights, and/or Cultural Humility
• Create system for on-call coverage and vacation coverage for all prescribers

Assessment and Treatment Planning

• Provide psychiatric assessment and ongoing medication management to assigned caseload of vulnerable population of children, adolescents, and adults
• Meet with children within regulatory body deadlines and preferably at convenient hours outside of school day hours when possible; include youth and family in treatment decisions
• Participate in admission and discharge meetings as needed
• Attend weekly multidisciplinary meetings and consult around presenting problem, treatment goals, interventions, medications, target symptoms, and potential side effects
• Document interventions comprehensively and accurately
• Work in collaboration with community providers including local hospitals and clinics, to ensure referral to specialty care for medication, diagnostic and testing needs
• Be available during business hours for insurance reviews
• Ensure responsibilities regarding Duty to Warn and Mandated Reporting are fulfilled
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests, and review over results with Nurse or client if needed for education and continuity of care

• Medical degree from an accredited university with psychiatric training for at least one year
• Board certification in child and adult psychiatry; Maintains required professional credentialing and appropriate CME standards
• Current and valid registration as a physician under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine
• Current and valid Federal DEA registration, State DPH Controlled Substance registration and MA Driver’s License
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience providing psychopharmacology management to children, adolescents, and adults with behavioral health concerns
• Experience providing care to clients with significant trauma histories strongly preferred
• Experience with peer-to-peer reviews with third party payers preferred
• Ability to understand and implement agency treatment philosophy
• Commitment to highest quality of care and relevant evidence-based practices

• Computer literate including Microsoft Office, Office 365, and Internet Explorer with the ability to learn new software applications
