NATURE OF WORK
The purposes of this position are to perform and complete unskilled and semi-skilled municipal building, and other maintenance and light construction work.
Included are assignments such as snow and ice control operations, vehicle cleaning, seasonal clearing and cleaning operations, facilities maintenance, repair, and light construction; shop maintenance; loading, stocking, and transporting; and implementing job site and work safety and efficiency procedures. Performance is subject to review according to the City's personnel plan through observation, reports and the results achieved. Due to the nature of this role, it shall not be considered for inclusion in the Solid Waste rotation.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Supports equipment maintenance operations in the maintenance garage; sweeps bays, wipes down lifts, wash windows, wash and wipe air lines, and keep metal working organized and clean.
2. Performs preventative maintenance on shop equipment, jacks, lifts, fork lift, and shop vehicles to include washing, greasing, fluid film, tire pressures, and other tasks as assigned.
3. Loads and unloads heavy stock and materials from vehicles and utilizes the fork lift when necessary.
4. Assists Mechanics as required. Steam cleans vehicles and equipment, greases vehicles and equipment, assists with weekly vehicles inspections, performs diesel re-gens, assists with seasonal vehicle/equipment preparations, and regularly exercises low use vehicles.
5. Provides inventory and stocking assistance to the Inventory Technician, picks up and drops off vehicles/trucks for their scheduled maintenance. Stocks and maintains an organized tire shed.
6. Performs other heavy laboring and various unskilled and semi-skilled tasks essential to an efficient vehicle and equipment maintenance facility using a wide variety of power, pneumatic and hand tools.
7. Assists with fabrication, sanding, and painting equipment, plows, and salters.
8. Monitors vehicle and equipment idle time in the yard and employs safety practices around equipment and in the shop.
9. Operates a snow plow truck and/or snow blower. Shovels snow and spreads sand and salt, sweeps sidewalks and entrances to the Garage, plows and snow blows around garage doors and the part shed, and ensures garage entrances are clear.
10. Subject to call out to respond to emergencies after normal working hours.
EXAMPLES OF OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Certification as an A-B UST-AST operator for the City’s fueling system.
2. Operates and checks vehicles, attachments, and tools for correct fluid levels, pressures and general operating condition. Services, cleans and washes vehicles and equipment. Reports repair needs to supervisors and mechanics.
3. Performs other duties as may be assigned.
ENVIRONMENT, WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT
Primary duties of this position involve: maintaining the cleanliness of the maintenance garage and related facilities, equipment, and machinery. Work is performed in a garage, public works yard, at field locations, in vehicles, and outside in all weather conditions. Current position includes some limited physical requirements including: frequently moving and transporting equipment, supplies, and tools weighing up to 80 pounds, and possible exposure to hazardous chemicals, gases, odors, dangerous heights, lift equipment, and continuous noises from machine operations.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES
1. Ability to determine an appropriate way to perform various tasks and to efficiently and effectively complete assigned work.
2. Ability to effectively and safely use power, hydraulic and pneumatic driven tools, other test and safety equipment, and specialized equipment such as various pumps, hand tools, specialized machines and equipment and a working knowledge of the characteristics of materials used i.e., their purpose and suitability for application or use.
3. A strong commitment to producing excellent work and work products in the most cost effective manner possible.
4. On-going development and training of acquired skills and knowledge in the efficient, safe and effective use of equipment, materials, tools and time.
5. Strong personal example to provide excellent services to external and internal customers.
6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, co- workers, employees in other divisions or municipal departments and City officials.
7. Ability to communicate effectively with the general public, City staff, and government officials at all levels and maintain an understanding of racial equity, inclusion, and belonging.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants for this position must have graduated from high school or have earned a graduate equivalent diploma (GED), have a working knowledge of how to care for, operate and use tools and equipment effectively and efficiently and have not less than two years’ experience in construction or maintenance work. New hires must obtain before the end of their probationary period and incumbents must possess a valid commercial driver’s license, class B and have no offenses which would prohibit or restrict insurability by any insurance carrier providing coverage to the City. Additional certifications and licensing may be required.
