Overview:

The Summer Learning Experience (SLE) student mentor provides contracted mentoring services to high school aged students. The effective mentor will focus on the academic and social-emotional needs of the students in either a ‘pull-out’ or ‘push-in’ model to build strength and knowledge and promote positive overall well-being. The student mentor will work closely with the school administration to meet the identified needs of the participating students. The student mentor also communicates and conferences with their program supervisor and parents to provide information on student progress.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Obtaining parental consent for participation
  • Establish mentor/mentee(s) relationship
  • Establishing goals for the students based upon their academic and social-emotional needs
  • Interacting with key school personnel including the school administration and teachers
  • Adhere to compliance requirements (e. documentation, reporting)
  • Maintains professional communication and rapport with parents
  • Adheres to all requirements for effective and safe instruction
  • Attends regular cohort staff meetings
  • Maintains open communication with mentoring program supervisor and/or site managers
  • Additional responsibilities may be required as needed and are determined by the mentoring program supervisor and/or site manager

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma required. College experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of computer software required.
  • The student mentor must have demonstrated proficiency in basic educational skills, including math and literacy (assessment of proficiency may be administered prior to employment).
  • The student mentor must be personable, caring, and professional in their interactions with colleagues, school staff, parents, and students.
  • Previous Catapult Learning employees must be in good standing to qualify for this position.

NYC Department of Education, Nonpublic Schools Requirements:

  • Copy of high school/college diploma
  • Copy of current resume
  • Attend and complete the following online courses through the DOE
  • School Violence Prevention course
  • Child Abuse Reporting course
  • Fingerprint clearance through DOE PETS system at 65 Court Street, Brooklyn, NY

Staff will not be allowed to work with students until the above is completed and verified by the DOE
