The Public Health Department is looking for Temporary Health Technicians to join our Communicable Disease Investigation Team! Vital duties of our Communicable Disease Investigation Team Health Techs include:


  • Calling individuals who have recently tested positive for COVID-19 to provide guidance and offer resource referrals to ensure a successful isolation period.
  • Supporting schools in reporting COVID-19 outbreaks.
  • Reaching out to individuals who may be suffering from long COVID-19 to offer resources.
  • Entering data into case management database.
  • Maintaining confidentiality.
Communicable Disease Investigation Health Technicians are an integral part of the Nevada County Public Health Department who will assist with efforts to control the spread of COVID-19 and protect our most vulnerable residents from illness. Overall, their main goal is to keep our community safer from disease transmission and provide support to those who test positive for COVID-19. This position is ideal for individuals with excellent interpersonal skills as the majority of work is done one-on-one over the phone and health coaching skills are highly desired. Having a flexible schedule and being bilingual are a plus, but not required.

The Health Technician II is the first journey level class in the Health Technician series. Incumbents are responsible for a specialized function that requires approximately two years of work experience in a health related field. Incumbents are expected to successfully perform all phases of work and to exercise independence of decision and action under general direction. Incumbents may also perform in a lead capacity.

This is a temporary and part-time position working an average of 20 hours but not more than 29 hours per week, for a maximum of 1000 hours per fiscal year. Temporary employees earn sick leave but are not eligible for other vacation or holiday pay, or for medical, dental, vision benefits, or CalPERS.

Sick Leave:
Temporary County employees shall accrue at the rate of one (1) hour of sick leave for each thirty (30) hours worked effective July 1, 2015. Temporary County employees can accrue a maximum of 48 hours of sick leave per fiscal year.

Medical Benefits:
Temporary employees whose assignments average 30 hours per week or more are eligible to enroll in County-sponsored medical benefits.
