This full-time, permanent position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located at Minam River Wildlife Area in Wallowa County, Oregon.

What you will do:
Assist the Wildlife Area Program Manager with implementation of planned projects and daily activities to achieve Wildlife Area Program objectives consistent with the agency’s goals and Federal Aid Work Plan. This position will focus on wildlife habitat maintenance and development, spring maintenance, fence repair, weed control, farming, equipment maintenance and vegetation control.
Assist in planning and implementing wildlife habitat enhancement projects
  • Control non-native, invasive plant and animal species
  • Conduct controlled burns
  • Develop and maintain food plots thru various farming practices
  • Irrigation of food plots (hand/wheel line systems)
  • Conduct rangeland/upland enhancement projects
  • Conduct wetland/riparian habitat enhancement projects
  • Manage water levels to elicit desired wetland vegetation
  • Plant trees, shrubs and grasses
Maintenance and Development
  • Operate and maintain tractors, plows, discs, harrows, drills, fertilizer spreaders and other farming implements.
  • Operate a wide variety of power tools, hand tools, shop tools, pumps, chainsaws, etc.
  • Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on all equipment, farm implements and vehicles.
  • Operate trucks, pickups, trailers, backhoes, cats, graders, all terrain vehicles.
  • Maintain and construct Area fences
  • Grade or plow Area roads and feed sites
  • Conduct maintenance and complete area irrigation of area hay fields
  • Maintain Area buildings and public use facilities, including: construction, painting, plumbing, etc.;
  • Construct, install and repair informational and regulatory wildlife area signs on the Area.
Wildlife Management
Conduct wildlife inventories on the Area. Assist district in wildlife damage complaints. Assist district in fish and wildlife inventories. Use firearms to dispatch sick or injured wildlife. Monitor wildlife for injuries or disease.

Working Conditions
  • Frequently required to work outside, involving prolonged and strenuous field work, at times during inclement weather conditions.
  • Requires lifting 80-pound fertilizer and feed sacks and 100-pound hay bales with assistance.
  • Periodic encounters with angry landowners and the public.
  • Requires operating farming equipment, tractors, plows, discs, and the use of hand and power hand tools.
  • A valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) is required as a condition of employment in this position. The employee is responsible for the cost of the CDL and for physicals required to hold a CDL, except as stipulated in the SEIU Collective Bargaining Agreement. The employee in this position must participate in the agency's drug and alcohol testing program for CDL holders as outlined in DAS Policy 105-050-0003 as a condition of employment. This includes drug and alcohol testing on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return to duty and follow-up basis. Cost associated with required drug and alcohol testing are paid by the department.
  • “This position requires the possession of a Public Pesticide Applicator License (PPAL).
  • “This position requires an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on-the-job use of quads and three-wheeled ATVs (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department

  • “This position requires passing of a computerized criminal history background check. The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal history background check with fingerprinting before being hired into this position, and the employee will be subject to annual checks during employment.”
  • This position requires occasional use of a firearm to deliver immobilization drugs and projecting nets for wildlife capture, euthanizing injured or sick wildlife, killing or hazing nuisance animals or birds, collecting animals for research or other studies, and protection from dangerous animals in close quarters.
  • “This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.
  • Weekend and holiday work required during the feed season (December thru March)

Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified or uncertified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • An Associate’s degree in Wildlife Technology or Agriculture and two years and six months of wildlife experience in a wildlife program. (Twelve months of fisheries or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience); OR
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Science, Agriculture, or a closely-related Bachelor’s degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework and one year of wildlife experience in a wildlife program. (Six months of fisheries or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience); OR
  • Eighteen months of experience in the care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming and two years and six months of wildlife experience in a wildlife program. (Two years of fisheries or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).
Desired Skills and Knowledge:
  • Observe, identify, and report activities and conditions of wildlife species and their habitat.
  • Recognize potential disease, parasite, or other problems in wildlife, or related habitat.
  • Trap, capture, immobilize, treat, or transport mammals or birds.
  • Conduct field studies such as counting, tracking, identifying, and reporting a variety of wildlife, or habitat species and conditions.
  • Preparing and presenting oral and written reports.
  • Work with the public, agency staff, or other agencies to convey or get information.
  • Analyzing project goals and determine work tasks.
  • Evaluate long term maintenance and repair needs and preparing relevant information.
  • Order and maintain adequate inventory of supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Interpret, apply and explain laws, rules, policies, or procedures related to wildlife management.
  • Operation and maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and hand and power tools to fabricate, maintain, or repair equipment and structures.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as tractors or farming equipment.
  • Understand and apply wildlife practices.
