The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is seeking applicants for a Cook for the Governor Morehead School for the Blind (GMS.) GMS is a residential school, responsible for providing educational instruction to visually impaired students in grades K-12 from across North Carolina.

This position is responsible for assisting the Food Services Division in providing high quality, nutritious meals for students and staff at the Governor Morehead School. This position's primary job responsibilities include following menu and cook schedules to prepare and cook meals using standardized recipes. Other duties include cleaning and sanitizing all kitchen equipment to include slicer, tables, mixers, ovens and fryer, steamer, microwave oven, steam kettles, dishes at pot sink, and dish washer.

The Cook will assist with dining hall clean up as needed. Additionally, this position will be responsible for cleaning and sanitizing pots and pans used in preparing and cooking, scrubbing and mopping kitchen floors, and cleaning walk-in-coolers, freezers and ventilation hoods. This position will routinely be involved in food prep of cup fruits for the next day meal services.

Excellent customer service in interacting with students and staff is essential to the functions of this role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Basic knowledge of methods of preparation and cooking of food in quantity lots.
  • Basic knowledge of the amounts of raw food needed to supply the number of persons to be served.
  • Basic knowledge of the standard tools, methods, and practices utilized to maintain food safety.
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:
  • Considerable knowledge of the uses and adaptabilities of the various pieces of equipment such as kettle, convection oven, convection steamer, brazing pan, mixer, food processor, slicer, and deep fryer.
NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to pass Criminal Background Check.
  • Must be able to pass drug screening.
  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Position involves standing or walking approximately 90% of the work day.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Education and/or experience in food preparation that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade equivalent to one year of experience in a commercial and/or institutional setting.
