The Concord Middle School Assistant Principal provides leadership to the school community and to the Concord Public Schools at the direction of the Superintendent of Schools and Concord Middle School Principal. The assistant principal assists in the daily operations of the school by employing student-centered, effective, and efficient practices. The assistant principal implements policies and directives as assigned by the principal and central office administrators, the Massachusetts Department of Education, and the federal government. The assistant principal works collaboratively with the principal to implement policies and directives promoting the success of all students, accountability in all practices, and fiscal responsibility at the site level.He or she must meet his or her legal and moral responsibilities, acting with integrity, fairness, and professionalism in all matters. The assistant principal handles most of the student discipline and direct student services as determined by the principal. Proficiently performs the responsibilities described below and all other duties assigned. Hours: 12 month, 7:30am 4:30pm (with some evening commitments)Start date: July 1, 2023 MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Educational Leadership: Articulates the vision and mission of the district and promotes the school-based goals Leads with integrity, courage, vision, hope, and compassion Has a high competence with master scheduling and working with Internet based scheduling software Reviews, evaluates, and revises instructional programs on the basis of sound information and relevant data Assist in the implementation and monitoring of school curriculum to ensure that content, scope and sequence are appropriate to student learning at different grade levels and reflect the principles of the states Common Core of Learning and Curriculum Frameworks Understands approaches to organizational change, school-based management, and school restructuring Encourages experimentation and rigorous evaluation of new pedagogical approaches Plans effectively for the implementation of policy decisions, taking into account unanticipated consequences and costs Promotes ongoing positive communication with students, parents and community agencies, effectively involving them in the education of children Assists in establishing and maintaining a healthy school climate focusing on the learning of students and staff Oversees the implementation of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System within the school, as appropriate Serves as an agent for productive change within the school and the district Implements comprehensive student support services and activities geared to the needs and interests of all students School Management: Employs district approved, effective and current methods of personnel selection, supervision, and evaluation Collaborates well with staff in decision-making, team building and developing productive strategies which foster improving learning and teaching Maintains respectful, honest, open, and effective communication with school staff, the district office, parents, and community members; apprises the superintendent of significant events occurring in the school Assists in the management of the school facilities and services, working closely with the principal, school-based, and central office to ensure productive and appropriate practices Works with the principal to coordinate information technology and systems at the school level, collaborating closely with information technology staff to ensure consistency with the district technology plan and sound fiscal actions Foresees potential difficult, negative, and/or volatile situations and takes productive steps to prevent them from happening Observes all conditions of contracts and uses conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation strategies to resolve conflict; foresees problems and works to avoid them Performs responsibilities as outlined by the principal and the superintendent of schoolsProfessional Development: Assists in the coordination of an effective and comprehensive site professional development program with staff members which focuses on the vision and goals of the school and which is consistent with district staff development goals and objectives Models ongoing professional development through personal scholarship, reflective practices, and serving as a teacher of teachers Applies knowledge of adult learning to effective staff development programs and in-service education when appropriate Provides resources and opportunities to enhance staff performance Administers services and programs which acknowledge the diverse needs of both seasoned educators and new teachers as directed by the principal Develops a personal plan for professional development based upon self-reflection and external evaluationEquity: Serves as an advocate for equal access to education and equal opportunities in education for all children In coordination with the principal, applies and adapts school or state guidelines to meet needs of a diverse student population in compliance with federal and state law, state regulations, and school committee policy, as applicable Promotes respect for all members of the school community; accepts and respects individual and group differences with regard to gender, language, race, sexual orientation, religion, and socioeconomic background Fosters a school climate that addresses the individual needs of students in a diverse society Recognizes and addresses bias in teaching materials, assessment instruments, school practices, and school organization Works closely with the principal, assistant superintendent, and the director of special education in ensuring that appropriate instruction and services are provided for students with special needs Provides programs or activities that help all students acquire a positive civic identity Fosters understanding that effort is a key factor in achievement Ensures high academic expectations for all students Holds staff, students, and self to high standards of performance and behavior Relationships with the Community: Promotes partnerships among staff, parents, business, and the community Assesses the needs of parents and community members and involves them in decision making as appropriate Involves families and other community members in developing the vision, goals, improvement plans, and programs for the school/district.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED: Studies educational research and knows educational principles and research that promote sound practices Familiar with the range of instructional programs and policies that promote academic learning for all students Effectively demonstrates knowledge with the range of student support services Knows multiple strategies to assess student performance. Understands federal, state, and municipal laws and regulations affecting public education, staff, and students including laws on disability, civil rights and responsibilities, issues of liability, and due process rights Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills The position offers a highly competitive compensation package.
