Job SummaryPerforms semiskilled work enforcing local and State laws and ordinances for the keeping, regulation, and protection of animals, investigating complaints, capturing animals, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work performed under the limited supervision of the Police Sergeant.
Wage range for this position is $41,612.64 - $54,096.42 and includes full benefits package. Essential Functions
Captures stray and feral animals with various live box traps, nets, and catch poles; transports and processes captured animals into shelter.
Receives, investigates, and answers complaints concerning stray, wild, nuisance, or owned animals and other wildlife; patrols and checks for animals running at large, licenses, and vaccinations; impounds animals suspected of rabies or other infectious diseases; issues appropriate warning notices and citations to enforce applicable ordinances and regulations. Picks up and disposes of dead animals and animals dangerous to the public.
Provides information to the public regarding ordinances, regulations, and mediates nuisance complaints; educates citizens and encourages humane treatment of animals.
Maintains appropriate records, logs, and files and prepares reports.
Performs administrative tasks; answers telephone; attends meetings; assists the public with the completion of standardized forms or documents; accepts and processes fees.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
This work is sedentary and requires the occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, bending, reaching, hand dexterity (grasping, holding, keyboarding, repetitive movements), reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, using the telephone, contact with government officials and the general public, working overtime, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to extreme weather conditions, exposure to vibration and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED with coursework in law enforcement, criminal justice, or related field.
Up to 1 year experience handling animals, in law enforcement.
Special Requirements:
Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan.
