New Alternatives for Children, Inc. (NAC) is an award-winning not-for-profit agency in Midtown Manhattan, with a satellite Bronx office, dedicated to serving children and families with medical complexity, chronic health conditions, significant disabilities and behavioral challenges. To assist in achieving this mission, NAC is currently seeking a Youth Development Specialist (Peer Project) to join its Youth Development Service.

Description of Responsibilities:

· Receive training in, plan for and implement the evidence-based Wyman Teen Outreach Program (TOP) Curriculum, which embraces a holistic, comprehensive approach to stimulating cognitive, social, and/or emotional growth, and helps youth develop a positive sense of self, make connections to others and decrease risk-taking behavior.

· Facilitate discussion groups centered around positive youth development, self-awareness, and engagement with peers.

· Coordinate arrangements with venues, sites, and activity locations, and manage logistics with NAC Transportation Department and other staff.

· Develop a variety of pro-social activities, field trips, and discussions with pre-teen youth, including a community service project.

· Perform administrative duties including making weekly reminder phone calls to families, entering records into Excel database and NAC’s online portal, and preparing materials for weekly groups.

· Serve as leader of youth groups by managing staff on directives and ensuring staff are appropriately maintaining the safety and well-being of each youth participant.

· Conduct intake interviews with parents of prospective clients to gather information about family history, medical conditions, and youth’s behavioral patterns to assess if youth will be a good fit for the program and to best prepare for work with him/her.

· Develop topics, plan agendas, and co-facilitate monthly parent/caregiver education groups centered around building positive parenting skills and educating about pre-adolescent development.

· Engage at-risk pre-teens with special medical and mental healthcare needs, including youth involved in the foster care system and preventive services.

· Collaborate with NAC staff and outside organizations to invite facilitators to present valuable information to parents/caregivers.

· Design and implement incentives to promote attendance and participation of both youth and parents/caregivers.

· Record group notes following group activities and discussions.

· Conduct home visits as needed to conduct outreach and complete intake assessments.

· Assist with NAC’s Court Involved Mental Health Initiative Youth Strong program: Conduct Mental Health Screenings to assess if youth are at-risk for involvement in the Criminal Justice System. Reports include CDI Children’s Depression Inventory; BASC Behavior Assessment Systems for Children; Trauma History Questionnaire; and CRAFFT

· Participate in case reviews and team meetings to collaborate about participants and ensure they are receiving appropriate services.

· Serve as task supervisor for Social Work Intern(s).

· Commitment to work on Saturdays for youth groups.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or related field /MSW preferred but not required.
  • Experience facilitating adolescent support groups highly preferred.
  • Experience working with youth and families.
  • Experience engaging parents and caregivers.
  • Excellent organizational skills and computer skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and web-based information searches.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish preferred.
