Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, Valley Regional Office, seeks a qualified individual to assist in implementing the region’s Virginia Water Protection (VWP) permitting and inspection program, including maintenance of the agency’s database and files with respect to VWP projects. This position will assist in the agency’s VWP program development; process VWP permit applications and related submittals in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and guidance; and provide appropriate technical support for compliance and enforcement issues by working with relevant parties to achieve resolution efficiently, openly, fairly, and consistently. This position will also provide technical and procedural assistance to other DEQ staff performing VWP duties, and assist with other regional programs as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of and/or experience with environmental engineering principles; natural sciences including surface waters and wetlands; water quality laws, regulations, and programs; and compliance and enforcement practices.
• Ability to review and explain permit applications, permits, and related correspondence.
• Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
• Ability to work effectively with little direct supervision and work well with diverse groups of people.
• Project management experience (Ability to effectively track and process multiple concurrent projects).
• Must be sensitive to public attitudes and concerns while effectively carrying out the agency’s mission as part of a collaborative team.
• Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheets, and database management.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in environmental engineering and/or natural science, or a combination of work experience and education demonstrating an equivalent technical background.
