United Way of Vermillion operates the Community Connection Center (CCC), a one-stop-shop for people in need in Clay County, South Dakota, a college community where nearly one third of the population lives in poverty. The VISTA will work with several food security programs in our community to identify gaps and barriers in access to our services, plan for targeted expansion and collaboration to target those areas, and inform those in need about the services. The VISTA will also have the opportunity to gain skills in research and program design while developing plans for our Mobile Outreach Vehicle (MOVe), which will bring the services of the CCC to those who cannot come to us. This position affords the opportunity to make a measurable impact in the lives of those living with hunger as a part of a passionate and energetic team. The work of the VISTA will help ensure direct feedback from people served to guarantee that future services meet their needs. In addition to the AmeriCorps living allowance, health coverage, and educational award, the VISTA will be eligible for housing assistance up to $200 per month, training, and organization sponsored travel to other sites for research. The VISTA will have access to the services of the CCC, including the Vermillion Food Pantry and the weekly Welcome Table community meal. Vermillion, South Dakota is a small but welcoming community located on the bluffs of the Missouri National Recreational River, with ample access to hiking, fishing, and boating. The community itself is easily traversable by bicycle or on foot, and public transit is available. We are within two hours of several mid-sized airports and an AMTRAK station.
