Position Summary Information

General Information
James Madison University (JMU) Telecommunications is accepting applications for a Lead Telecommunications Technician to install, repair, maintain and upgrade all forms of CATV, network and telecommunications infrastructures throughout JMU properties.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Install, repair, maintain, and upgrade all forms of CATV, Network, DAS, and Telecommunications infrastructure throughout JMU properties.
  • Serve as main point of contact for customers and/or engineers and performs site surveys. Develop Scope of Work and estimate for material/labor costs.
  • Meet project milestones as assigned within overall project timelines. Proactively identify problems or issues that could negatively impact assigned tasks and provides timely resolutions.
  • Effectively direct the activities of subcontractors and other personnel as assigned by the Assistant Director of Telecommunications.
  • Locate and mark underground telecommunications, CATV, and network cabling to prevent damages that might compromise systems or services.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Working knowledge of telecommunications wiring. Advanced technical skills and knowledge of telecommunications industry and installation including voice, data and video structured cabling systems.
  • Understanding of Telecom Color Code for copper and or fiber media.
  • Demonstrable experience of commercial or residential installation of fiber optic, Category 5E, Category 6 and Category 6A cabling, terminating and testing.
  • Outstanding troubleshooting skills with ability to efficiently work on numerous concurring projects/tasks and prioritize accordingly.
  • Excellent customer service skills with effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to positively engage with JMU and non-JMU personnel.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, squat, bend, and climb for long periods of time with the ability to lift 50+ pounds repetitively.
  • Must be trustworthy and dependable
  • Ability to safely work independently and as part of a team. Needs to be a team player with a “can-do” attitude.
  • Must be able to follow directions and work with minimal supervision.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Preferred:
  • Ability to use basic hand and power tools such as drills, saws, levels, etc.
  • Ability to learn how to work with all variations of video, voice and data infrastructure design, installation, practices, standards and equipment in both inside and outside facilities.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite with ability to accurately complete documentation in a timely manner.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
