DEPARTMENT : RADIOLOGY
HOURS: 8AM-4PM

Job Summary

Directs departmental activities, assumes responsibilities for professional staff and supports staff and maintains standard of quality; plans, directs, and supervises all technical aspects of the department in regard to service, programs, and evaluations. The position will be responsible for day to day operations of the division and work assignments to accommodate the work requirements for staff throughout Cook County Health (CCH). Assists in performing procedures and other duties as required. Assist with development, interpreting, and application of departmental policies, budgets, radiation safety and long-range plans. Responsible for maintaining accurate up to date records for IDNS, NRC, and FDA.

This position is exempt from Career Service under the CCH Personnel Rules.

General Administrative Responsibilities

Collective Bargaining

  • Review applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements and consult with Labor Relations to generate management proposals
  • Participate in collective bargaining negotiations, caucus discussions and working meetings

Discipline

  • Document, recommend and effectuate discipline at all levels
  • Work closely with labor relations and/or labor counsel to effectuate and enforce applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements
  • Initiate, authorize and complete disciplinary action pursuant to CCH system rules, policies, procedures and provision of applicable collective bargaining agreements

Supervision

  • Direct and effectuate CCH management policies and practices
  • Access and proficiently navigate CCH records system to obtain and review information necessary to execute provisions of applicable collective bargaining agreement

Management

  • Contribute to the management of CCH staff and CCH’ systemic development and success
  • Discuss and develop CCH system policy and procedure
  • Consistently use independent judgment to identify operational staffing issues and needs and perform the following functions as necessary; hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, direct or discipline employees pursuant to applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements
  • Work with Labor Relations to discern past practice when necessary

Typical Duties

  • Schedules and coordinates the activities of the technical and non-physician staff and patient flow in the functional areas of the Department of Radiology, Division of Nuclear Medicine.
  • Initiates IV’s for the administration of isotopes.
  • Responsible for the delivery of all technical professional services and the provisions of high quality care, in the most cost-effective manner, optimizing the quality of care and technical qualities of studies.
  • Coordinates all on-call scheduling to maximize patient visits throughout CCH.
  • Prepares or delegates work schedules and work assignments for technical and non-physician staff in Nuclear Medicine.
  • Reviews job duties, performance volume and quality of work of technical staff in assigned areas. Responsible for clinical instructions of students and other staff in Nuclear Medicines.
  • Ensures all registered staff in Nuclear Medicine maintain current licenses, i.e. IDNR, IDNS, etc.
  • Orders routine supplies. Supervises purchases of supplies and equipment.
  • Ensures that all work areas are properly cleaned, prepared, and decontaminated upon patient discharge.
  • Ensures that radiation safety standards are properly met according to the Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety regulations and Cook County Health policies.
  • Must adhere to and remain in compliance with RSO recommendations and IDNS regulations.
  • Assists the Manager of Imaging Services with a variety of administrative duties.
  • Delegates appropriate responsibility to designated staff.
  • Meets with staff and radiology administration and represent department at meetings, activities, external agencies and organizations as assigned.
  • Completes time and attendance records, reviews and approves request for time off.
  • Monitors the quality control activities which include, but not limited to, Gamma Camera, PETCT systems and radiopharmaceuticals, and maintains infection control.
  • Checks quality of images and ensures proper identification and labeling.
  • Maintains radiation protection and safety as it relates to patient's staff and equipment. Remains current with Nuclear Medicine protocols.
  • Pursues continuing education in professional practice and management skills.
  • Takes and responds to after hour calls as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Reporting Relationships

Reports to the Manager of Imaging Services


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of an American Medical Association (AMA) approved school of Nuclear Medicine Technology and/or PETCT Technology
  • Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) and/or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB)
  • Active license by Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) or able to obtain Illinois State licensure prior to starting employment.
  • Four (4) years of clinical experience in Nuclear Medicine Three (3) years of work experience in a supervisory and/or management capacity in Nuclear Medicine
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification obtained through the American Heart Association
  • Must be able to travel to multiple sites within Cook County Health

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in a health-related field from an accredited college or university
  • Two (2) years of clinical experience in PETCT

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

  • Thorough knowledge of all Nuclear Medicine and PETCT techniques, equipment policies and procedures and of hospital policies and procedures, in particular S.P.E.C.T. and images requiring computer processing Thorough knowledge of Nuclear Medicine and PETCT techniques, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) American College of Radiology (ACR) policies and procedures, hospital policies and procedures
  • Extensive technical knowledge of the handling of radionuclides and radiation detection
  • Through knowledge of Cerner, SMS, PC ad PACS systems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups
  • Skill in use of all Nuclear Medicine equipment and machinery, i.e. Gamma Cameras, Nuclear Medicine computers, collimators, etc.
  • Ability to plan, direct, assign and supervise the work of others
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure when challenged
  • Ability to prioritize, plan and organize projects and tasks

Physical and Environmental Demands

This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
