Job Description

Nevada State College (NSC) invites applications for a student worker within the Division of Workforce Development. The Scorpion STEAM Academy (SSA) Summer Camp Leader will contribute to the implementation of grant-funded day camps for youth participants.

NSC Scorpion STEAM Academy (SSA) supports the development and growth of its diverse community of young STEAM learners through innovative, engaging experiences that promote the acquisition of interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to enhance student's personal, academic, and professional career success while meeting the needs of tomorrow's workforce. SSA promotes an increased interest in science, technology, engineering, and math, including their applications in art and music, through targeted classroom-based learning reinforced by hands-on projects and educational field trips to facilities of industry partners.

Individuals interested in any of the SSA's content areas are strongly encouraged to apply and should indicate area of interest in their application. The following camps will be offered in Summer 2023:
  • Programming
  • Robotics
  • Visual Media / Digital Arts
  • Natural Sciences
  • Forensics/CSI
  • Health Care / Medical Science

SSA day camps will take place Monday-Friday (7AM-6PM) during Summer 2023 as follows:
  • Week 1: June 5th through June 9th.
  • Week 2: June 12th through June 16th.
  • Week 3: June 19th through June 23rd.
  • Week 4: June 26th through June 30th.
  • Week 5: July 10th through July 14th.
  • Week 6: July 17th through July 21st.

Mandatory training will be held on June 1st and 2nd for all student workers. Continued employment into the academic year is not guaranteed.

Note that all employment offers are conditional until the candidate successfully passes a background investigation which may consist of more than one verification procedure.

Core Responsibilities:

SSA Camp Leader will perform routine duties with detailed instruction in support of execution of grant activities. The incumbent, with supervision from the Director and Program Specialist, will be expected to:
  • Maintain working knowledge of relevant SSA policies and procedures.
  • Participate in all camp activities including, but not limited to classroom activities, site visits, and group meetings.
  • Support facilitation and implementation of camp activities and provide outstanding customer service through excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Provide mentorship to SSA participants and promote high educational outcome expectations for students and mutual respect amongst instructors, mentors, and students.
  • Demonstrate the ability to follow instructions and receive/apply constructive feedback.
  • Assist instructors with instruction, classroom preparation, and classroom management.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of equipment, materials, and supplies.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Commitment to work Monday-Friday, full-time (40 hrs/wk), from June 1 to July 21.
  • Enrolled as a degree seeking student with a minimum of 6 credits in the current Spring 2023 AND upcoming Fall 2023 semesters at NSC.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and learn and apply procedures and regulations.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (NSC does not sponsor employment-related visas).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Enrollment and/or interest in any one of SSA content areas.
  • Experience working with youth and diverse populations.
  • Eligible for federal work-study financial aid program.

Work Hours:

June-July: Student employees will be expected to work Monday-Friday, 30-40 hours per week (between 7AM-6PM), during summer camp activities, if approved by the campus Executive of the department and so as long as student employees are not enrolled in any classes during the summer term.

Hourly Rate:

$10.50 per hour
