This is a laboratory-based position in a group that uses a combination of clinical samples from research subjects, cell culture, and mouse modeling to investigate the interaction how immune cells and airway epithelial cells communicate to direct physiology and tissue function. Under direct supervision and training, the hired individual will assist with: processing of biospecimens collected from human research subjects; cell culture of primary mouse or human cells or cell lines; sectioning, staining and microscopic imaging of tissues; husbandry, genotyping, and experimental treatment of mice; tissue dissection, cell isolation, and flow cytometric analysis of mouse tissues; extraction and analysis of DNA, RNA, and protein. The employee will also assist in experimental recordkeeping, sample tracking, ordering, equipment maintenance and general laboratory upkeep. Strong organization skills, enthusiasm, and a high standard of professional and scientific integrity are required, as is a 2-year commitment. Though not strictly required, the ideal candidate will have completed coursework and/or hands-on research in immunology or epithelial biology. Training for all other necessary tasks will be provided. This position represents an excellent opportunity to learn or further basic laboratory skills and to learn advanced techniques under direct supervision of the PI. There is an opportunity to eventually drive/direct an independent research project upon demonstration of meeting other requirements of the position.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine Program includes the UCSF Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine division (based at the Parnassus and Mt. Zion sites), the Pulmonary and Critical Care divisions of the San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center and the San Francisco VA Medical Center, and at UCSF’s Mission Bay campus. Each emphasizes different aspects of care for patients with lung disease and lung disease research. The Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine Division in the Department of Medicine have a long history of providing outstanding clinical care, performing innovative research and training academic scientists and physicians. We currently have active, well-funded clinical, translational and basic research programs in lung development, international lung health, pulmonary immunology, genetics of pulmonary and allergic diseases, lung transplantation, microbial pathogenesis, airway diseases, acute lung injury, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary malignancies and pulmonary health disparities. Our large, NIH training grant has been continuously funded since 1966. Nearly a quarter of all academic pulmonologists in the United States have trained at UCSF. This combined unit includes: 7 outpatient clinics, 4 inpatient services, a pulmonary function diagnostic center, 15 independent wet labs, 4 independent research service cores, 6 independent clinical research units, one specialty destination program, and the Nina Ireland Program in Lung Health focusing on philanthropic activities.

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Attention to detail, including the ability to precisely follow written protocols.
  • Ability to maintain an organized laboratory notebook (paper or electronic) on a daily basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated prior experience in a bench laboratory with basic laboratory procedures such as weighing, pipetting, and any combination of molecular biology, cell culture, microscopy, or animal modeling techniques
  • Demonstrated prior experience in a dry laboratory with computational biology or statistical experience Demonstrated proficiency in cell culture and sterile technique.
  • Demonstrated experience in mouse handling, mouse husbandry and/or mouse modeling.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in molecular biology techniques such as RNA/DNA purification, PCR, ELISA.
  • Computational biology coursework and/or research experience
  • Demonstrated experience with cell isolations and/or flow cytometry
