As a Virtual Sign Language Interpreter, you will be responsible for providing interpretation services to deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in a virtual-school setting. You will work from home, using video conferencing technology to connect with clients and provide interpretation services in real-time. Your role will be critical in facilitating communication between deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and hearing individuals, ensuring that all parties are able to fully participate and understand.
Responsibilities:

  • Provide interpretation services via video conferencing technology for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in various virtual settings, such as virtual meetings, webinars, online events, and more.
  • Accurately interpret spoken language into sign language and vice versa, ensuring that all parties can communicate effectively.
  • Use appropriate sign language techniques, such as facial expressions and body language, to convey tone and context of spoken language.
  • Stay up to date with industry terminology and best practices and seek out ongoing professional development opportunities to improve your skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality and always adhere to professional standards and ethics.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues as needed to ensure seamless communication.

Requirements:

  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English, with the ability to interpret both languages in real-time.
  • Certification from a recognized sign language interpreting program or organization, such as RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf). / Updated EIPA Score
  • Familiarity with video conferencing technology and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues as needed.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport and build relationships with clients.
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own schedule effectively.
  • Comfortable with handling sensitive information and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Familiarity with deaf culture and sensitivity to the needs of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
  • Comfortable working in a virtual setting and using technology to facilitate communication.
