JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: School Nutrition Training Manager

Qualifications: Associate’s degree in Food Service, Culinary, Nutrition, Business Administration, or related field from an accredited college or university OR High School Degree or equivalent and at least three years of experience in food service management. Experience with the National School Lunch Program preferred.

Reports to: Director of School Nutrition

Supervises: N/A

Purpose of Position: The primary job function is to provide instruction, guidance and training for new and currently employed School Nutrition managers, workers, and substitutes. Additional responsibilities include project management and food production.

Responsibilities, Duties, & Expectations:

  • The School Nutrition Training Manager promotes and implements the School Nutrition Department goals and values for students, staff, and parents.
  • Supports district-wide training for managers and staff to include, but not limited to; food orders, food preparation, point of sale problems, menu issues, personnel concerns, and monitoring HACCP procedures, etc. Supports the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) at the school and central office levels.
  • Administer Manager Trainee Program under the direction of the School Nutrition Director.
  • Support staff by physically working at any of the Mooresville Graded School District schools that have a new manager or a need for a manager due to an absence or vacancy. Maintain current School Nutrition Manager Credentials and ability to act as the “Person in Charge” when necessary.
  • Provides annual HACCP training to SN Staff and updates the districts HACCP plan to stay current with state and federal requirements.
  • Assists the School Nutrition Director in performing state required on-site reviews.
  • Assists the School Nutrition Director with menu planning and recipe development and testing, addresses product quality concerns.
  • Research new products and determines student acceptability of products.
  • Assist with the implementation of marketing strategies for individual school cafeterias and the entire district under the direction of the School Nutrition Director; evaluate existing marketing and merchandising materials and recommend changes as necessary.
  • Responsible for maintaining and distributing current substitute employee list, advising director when additional substitutes are required.
  • Coordinate Summer Feeding Programs under the direction of the School Nutrition Director.
  • Supports managers and office staff in areas of free/reduced meal applications, verification, meal charges, USDA food inventory and usage, etc. Supports and prepares documents for monthly managers’ training and meetings.
  • Attends all meetings as required by the School Nutrition Director and Superintendent.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the administration.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Managerial, organizational, and presentation skills required.
  • Must possess confidentiality and strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal communication and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to use common office machines and popular computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet and file maintenance programs.
  • Knowledge of adult learning, different learning styles, teaching methods and practices
  • Extensive knowledge of food service production and kitchen management, food safety and sanitation.
  • Analytical and detailed independent judgment is required. Makes decisions and recommendations under the guidance and supervision of the Director of School Nutrition. Ability to use critical thinking skills to solve problems that arise and prevent crisis.

PHYSICAL ABILITY:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand or sit for long periods of time; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The ability to be a safe food handler, free of diseases that may be transmitted by food is an absolute necessity. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and be able to transfer extremely hot and heavy food pans from food preparation equipment to serving area. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The selected candidate must be able to perform the duties of a rigorous work schedule which includes lifting, loading, and unloading, and pass a physical examination and drug screen certifying this ability.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

School Nutrition employees may be exposed to extreme hot/humid and cold temperatures, either while cooking or storing and retrieving items from the freezer. This job requires lifting, pushing, pulling moderately heavy and/or bulky items. Exposure to loud noises. Extended periods of standing.

Evaluation and Measurement of Performance: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of support personnel.

Terms of Employment: Eleven-month year. Work schedule to be established by the Board of Education.
