SALT Manager
Why build your career at Perkins & Co?
Great people. Interesting, complex work. Community involvement. Competitive pay and benefits. Collaboration. Diversity. Mentoring. Flexibility for a sustainable career.
We're looking for a SALT expert to join us in building our new practice!
This is a rare—perhaps once in a lifetime—opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a developing practice and reap the rewards that come with building something great. You’ll make your mark, helping to set the tone for the future. You won’t be going it alone, though. You’ll work with our wickedly smart SALT Director Sonjia Barker and have the tax department’s support. At Perkins, we operate as one firm. That means that we work together for our clients’ best interests, not in separate silos or playing politics. Work with your peers rather than competing against them! You’ll also enjoy schedule and work location flexibility and tremendous growth potential. Want to work part-time instead of full-time? We can do that, too.
FT Salary begins at $112K, varying DOE and geographic location. PT compensation will be prorated.
What’s expected of the SALT Manager?
- Assist in state and local tax consulting with a focus on optimization and risk management. This may include nexus determinations, audit defense planning, notice responses, and VDA projects
- Review state and local tax returns; including overseeing engagement workflows and teams
- Research and analyze a wide range of state and local tax issues and implications, including nexus considerations, apportionment methodology, and taxability
- Preparing memorandums, matrices, and other client deliverables
- Assist multistate companies with state and local tax controversy which includes managing state and local tax audits, represent the client throughout the audit process, and at hearings and appeal meetings, prepare protests
- Keep up to date with tax changes and industry trends by participating in education opportunities
- Leverage technology and other resources to capture efficiencies and technical accuracies.
- Participate in the billing and collection process
- Assist with other state and local ad hoc projects
Who Qualifies?
- 4+ years of recent related tax experience, preferably in a large local/regional or Big 4 public accounting firm (note: public accounting experience is NOT required)
- Experience in a paperless, cloud-based environment
- Experience performing tax research and providing technical advice on state and local tax issues
- Previous experience working with state or local tax authorities preferred
- Experience in state and local government revenue department preferred

- Must be a motivated self-starter and have experience in managing multiple client engagements/projects
- Able to work effectively both as part of a team and independently
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- CPA, Certified Member of the Institute (CMI), or bar license (potential flexibility regarding certifications/licensing for highly qualified individuals)
- Experience with sales/use tax, Washington State Excise Tax, or state income/franchise tax
