JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences is immediately seeking a Research Technologist (Level 2 or 3) within Penn State University’s CSL Behring Fermentation Facility (CBFF) . This facility is one of twelve Core Laboratories of the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences. The CBFF houses various capabilities from fermentation (flask – 500L), downstream processing, protein purification, and analytical. Interested individuals would be trained on both operation and maintenance of these various pieces of equipment.
Responsibilities: The individual will also be tasked with general project management, scheduling, and responsibilities to support facility operations. An example of a typical project involves the growth of recombinant Escherichia coli for the production of desired product (protein or molecular) that is isolated, purified, and/or quantified in the CBFF. All work performed in the facility is of BSL 1 nature. However, the facility brings in a variety of projects utilizing various organisms and scales and includes academic, government, and industrial projects. The successful applicant will support the CBFF’s efforts in executing tasks associated with these projects, coordinate with CBFF leadership, and work with student employees to accomplish tasks in an organized fashion. General facility upkeep, maintenance, and organization will be within the scope of responsibility of the successful applicant.
Education and Experience: This position may be filled at a Level 2 or 3. For a Level 2, this position requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher and 4+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. For a Level 3, this position requires a Bachelor's degree or higher (Master's degree preferred) and 7+ of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
A Bachelor’s level degree in the area of biological sciences or bioprocessing is desirable (Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biological or Biochemical Engineering, and other related degrees). Additional desirable skills include expertise in the use of the stated equipment, experience working in a laboratory environment, previous work in microbial culturing and knowledge of aseptic techniques, and familiarity with data management.
The successful applicant must have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, the ability to work both semi-independently and collaboratively with the CBFF team, good interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate clearly with team members and CBFF leadership.
