The institute bridges the University of Washington, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital. The Advanced Technology Lab is an entity within this institute and is located at the University of Washington. The Seattle Flu Alliance is continuing our research in the flu season with a commitment to investigating the overlap of the COVID-19 pandemic, seasonal influenza, and the transmission of other respiratory illnesses. Seattle Flu Alliance will continue to focus on at-risk populations, at-home collection of samples from members of the community, and transmission of pathogens in specific locations or settings.
The Seattle Flu Alliance, led by the Brotman Baty Institute, brings together clinical, research, and public health experts to understand outbreak dynamics, evaluate potential interventions, and help inform public health decision-making. More than ever, this year’s research exemplifies our mission to improve systems for detection, prevention, and response to respiratory illnesses.
POSITION PURPOSE
We seek an individual with a mix of molecular biology skills and strong organizational capabilities for the viral pathogen project at the BBI Advanced Technology Lab. The Research Scientist will contribute to researching multiple respiratory pathogens and mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic by receiving, processing, tracking, and storing thousands of specimens. This represents an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist to fill a research position on an exciting and cutting-edge project aimed at viral pathogen detection and saving lives.
This person will work under Dr. Lea Starita (UW Genome Sciences Assistant Professor) and her pathogen laboratory manager (research coordinator) Peter Han.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position requires significant organizational capabilities. The scientist must be willing to learn and understand sample tracking software and different communication platforms. The Research Scientist will be responsible for sample handling and tracking and may assist with the downstream molecular biology pipeline.
The Laboratory performs clinical grade research and as such adheres to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) standards. This requires formal (paid) on the job training and documentation of said training.
