PRIMARY JOB FUNCTION:
The RN is responsible to meet and exceed the expectations of the patient through excellence in patient care and customer service, the nursing process, coordinating patient care delivery, and delegating and supervising other members of the health care team. Knowledge of the behaviors, developmental stages, physical and emotional needs, life cycle changes, culture, comfort and care appropriate to the population, safety, infection control and risk management issues inherent in an
Ambulatory Surgery Center is imperative.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Responsible for the delivery of quality patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
2. Responsible for directing and coordinating all nursing care for patients based on established clinical nursing practice standards.
3. Collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes.
4. Utilizes knowledge of the patient’s age, cultural diversity, and development stages, physical and emotional needs to formulate the appropriate provision of patient care.
5. Contributes to the provision of quality nursing care through performance improvement techniques that demonstrate positive outcomes in patient care.
6. Ability to step outside of the routine to assume a different direction in patient care should the need arise.
7. Flexibility of hours, job assignments, responsibilities, ability to work well with differing educational levels of staff.
JOB KNOWLEDGE/RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Ability to utilize the nursing process in the provision of nursing care including but not limited to administering treatments and medications in compliance with the physician’s orders and applicable ASC policy, interpreting diagnostic tests, formulating a plan of care, collaborating with other health care providers and providing education to patients and/or significant others (while in compliance with HIPAA).
2. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients of all age groups-including knowledge of the principles of growth and development through the life span to identify patient needs in relation to age.
3. Must document/chart observations and other data related to the clinical condition of the patient. Must properly and accurately chart observations and activities related to patient care.
4. Must act as a patient advocate in all areas of patient care, to facilitate appropriate care, promote safety, and to provide patient comfort.
5. Participate in committee or activity functions/adheres to WSC policy and procedures and educational programs
6. Responsible for strict administration, control, dispensation and safety of narcotics in accordance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations and WSC policy.
7. Maintain appearance as clean, neat, and professional. Inappropriate or unsightly tattoos are not permitted to be visible to other staff or clients.
8. Unusual hairstyles, colors, makeup, piercings are not permitted.
9. Maintenance of a clean and tidy environment, careful and proper use of equipment and respect for time and cost of supplies and equipment is required.
10. Maintenance of accurate control of supplies and medications including appropriate records and documentation is necessary.
11. Follows policy and procedures regarding reporting of incidents, errors, infectious diseases, or other reportable events.
12. Accepts other duties as may be assigned by the Surgery Manager, including participation as activity leader for subcommittees.
13. Continue education in this specialized field or supporting fields to provide high quality care to patients, share knowledge with other staff, and provide support to WSC.
14. Committed to maintaining high standards regarding patient education, patient safety, patient satisfaction, staff growth, and facility success.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge, skills, and experience: Current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Indiana; or current licensure as a registered nurse in another state with evidence of application for Indiana licensure. Two years of previous RN experience preferred but not required. Ophthalmology OR experience is preferred. BLS must be current or become current within 1 year of hire. ACLS and
PALS required within 3 years of date of hire. Outstanding interpersonal skills as well as a neat and professional appearance are required. Knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviations, and ocular anatomy for accurate documentation are required as are proficient oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of Windows-based computer use preferred.
Degree of supervision (i.e. direct, indirect), independence, and discretion: Position requires the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Applicant will be expected to use independent judgment and critical thinking skills. It requires the ability to teach others with less knowledge and to learn from others with more extensive knowledge regardless of education, degree or position. It also requires a great deal of initiative and the flexibility to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Applicant must be able to delegate and accept delegation. Must be a role model for other members of the surgical team, should be committed to the team effort of maintaining a high quality ASC.
Physical demands: Applicant may be required to pull up or reposition patients in bed, assist with patient transfer from bed to bed, wheelchair to bed, bed to wheelchair, patients may be partial or total lifts. Knowledge of good body mechanics, adequate strength and physical health enabling the applicant to lift at least 50 pounds is required. Good hearing and visual acuity are required. Ability to read and review handwritten chart notations. Employee may be required to sit or stand for long periods of time, to bend over, and/or reach above their head. Employee must be able to move about the medical complex freely, negotiate stairs and assist with patient movement in the event of an emergency or during the course of providing care, without the long term use of assistive devices. Employee must be able to use hands and fingers to perform surgery tasks, testing, writing, and keyboarding.
