Position: Research & Development Engineer

Toray Performance Materials Corporation (TPMC) is currently seeking a Research & Development Engineer to join our team. The position will be based in Camarillo, CA and will report to TPMC’s Sr. R &D and Process Engineering Manager.

TPMC primarily services customers in the consumer recreation, medical, and electronics industries as well as other industrial segments.


Position Overview
: The primary purpose of this position is to design, develop, and recycle thermoplastic composites with focus on the polymer chemistry.


Major Duties and Requirements:

  • Conduct and document research on composite materials including, but not limited to resin formulation development and modification, composite product development, material properties characterization, failure and defect analysis and reduction.
  • Conduct and direct hands-on laboratory and scale up trials.
  • Drive company’s sustainability and zero waste strategy, conduct research in thermoplastic composites recycling and deliver viable recycled material solutions to customers.
  • Work in partnerships with global process engineers, production, and sales teams to develop technologies and mature them to suitable readiness level for transfer to production, providing support throughout the New Product Introduction (NPI) process.
  • Effectively communicate results through presentations and reports. Provide full, complete, and accurate documentation of all work as required by SOPs and Company policies and procedures.
  • Manage the regulatory compliance of the chemicals, raw material, and products including but are not limited to restricted substance list, WEEE/REACH/RoHs, Eco labels.
  • Build external network with suppliers, tollers, and institutes. Attend and present in conferences.
  • Jointly work with other team members to maintain a safe lab work environment and implement safe operating procedures to ensure an accident-free record and maintenance of compliance.


Experience and Education Requirements:

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Plastic Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related discipline, advanced degree is a plus.
  • 0-5 years of working experience, industrial experience is a plus.
  • Must have knowledge in polymer chemistry, polymeric materials, and material characterization such as DSC, TGA, DMA, UL94 etc.
  • Must have knowledge in static analysis, design of experiment principal.
  • Experience in polymer formulation design, compounding/extrusion, film/sheet processing is highly desirable.
  • Project management skills is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work in a global setting.
  • Experience in written technical report, peer reviewed journal publication is a plus.
  • Lean and Six sigma credential is a plus.
  • Bilingual such as Mandarin, Spanish, or Vietnamese is a plus.
  • Able to travel domestically and internationally (greater China and Vietnam) (20%).


Compensation:
A competitive compensation package including base salary, potential for bonus based on performance, health insurance, and 401k will be available to the qualified applicant.
