The College of New Jersey, Campus Police Department is looking for successful candidates for the position of Public Safety Telecommunicator Trainee. The Department consists of 21 sworn police officers, 6 dispatchers, 1 dispatch supervisor and 5 security officers, and a part time clerical staff. The Police Department is directed by a Chief of Police. The Office of campus police is dedicated to providing safety and security to the Campus Community.

TCNJ Campus Police Services operates a 24 hour/7 days a week 9-1-1 Communication & Dispatch Public Safety Answering Service. The PST will provide support to police and emergency services and assistance to walk in customers. The candidate will be responsible to monitor alarms and CCTV. TCNJ telecommunicators perform a full range of radio, telephone and Emergency 9-1-1 duties. They handle both emergency and non-emergency calls.

Required Qualifications:

  • Pass a thorough police background investigation
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Driver License
  • Availability for shift work and occasional mandatory overtime including weekends and holidays
  • Selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a New Jersey Public Safety Telecommunicator certification within one year of hire, as a condition of continued employment
  • 8-hour CPR Certification

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experienced dispatching of police officers
  • Working knowledge with law enforcement info systems such as NCIC, ATS, ACS, CJIS or MDT
  • 40-hour Basic Telecommunicator Course Certification

Employer Qualifications:

  • Final offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of background and reference checks

This position is a New Jersey Civil Service position with the state title Public Safety Telecommunicator. It is included for membership in the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) bargaining unit. The starting salary for Public Safety Telecommunicator Trainee is $42,768.18. Permanent appointment to this position is contingent upon the successful completion of a 4-month probationary period to access the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Salary for an internal candidate will be determined in accordance with Civil Service rules. The College offers a generous benefits package that includes health, dental, vision and prescription plans as well as pension, paid leave time and tuition savings programs.

Under a new residency bill signed into law by Governor Chris Christie, any individual hired on, or after September 1, 2011, will be required to establish a principal residence in New Jersey unless their position is exempt. New employees will have a full 365 days to establish such residence, from the effective date of hire. Any new employee who believes that they have a critical need to live outside of New Jersey, or that a move to a permanent residence within the state would constitute a hardship, may request an exemption from the provisions of the law by appealing to a five-member committee to be established by the State for the purpose of hearing such appeals.
