JOB PURPOSE AND REPORTING STRUCTURE: Under the direction of the Director of Behavioral Health with consultation from the Lead Psychiatrist, the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing psychiatric care to individuals seen in the Behavioral Health Clinic, following agency policies and procedures. The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is an integral member of the Behavioral Health team, collaborating with other behavioral health providers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Perform comprehensive behavioral health assessments and interventions, including evaluation, diagnosis (DSM-5), and treatment planning for all individuals seen.
• Provide supportive therapeutic interventions and motivational interviewing as appropriate
• Teach and counsel individuals and their informal supports regarding mental wellness and symptom management.
• Prescribe psychiatric medicine as necessary and appropriate in accordance with state and federal laws. Order and interpret laboratory tests and diagnostics studies as indicated.
• Evaluate for common and acute chronic physical conditions and refer to primary care provider for on-going treatment.
• Collaborate with psychiatrists to establish and review medication and other clinical guidelines. Review of guidelines will be done in a continuous manner but no less frequently than annually.
• Provide consultation to behavioral health nursing staff in order to maintain effective nursing practices.
• Ensure the timely and accurate completion of all required paperwork, records, and documentation.
• Coordinate patient care by interacting with key providers within key departments including Primary Care, Community Services and other Behavioral Health Providers.
• Maintains patient confidentiality consistent with current HIPAA regulations and WI and Federal regulations regarding mental health and substance abuse treatment

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Complete special projects as assigned

• PHYSICIAN/PSYCHIATRY CONSULTATION: It is recognized that Wisconsin Statutes view Licensed Nurse Practitioners as Independent Practitioners of Health Care, however consultation will occur whenever a situation arises that goes beyond the intent of the protocols or the competence, scope of practice, or experience of the nurse practitioner. This may include whenever the patient's condition fails to respond to the management plan within an appropriate time frame, based on the providers clinical judgment; for any uncommon, unfamiliar, or unstable patient condition; for any patient condition which does not fit the commonly accepted diagnostic pattern for the disease; for any unexplained or abnormal diagnostic finding; for any emergency situations after initial stabilization; and whenever a patient requests. The lead psychiatrist is responsible to provide the consultation as appropriate. Other staff psychiatrists can be consulted with if the lead psychiatrist is unavailable. Whenever a psychiatrist is consulted, a notation to that effect, including the psychiatrist's name must be recorded in the patient's medical record.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Requires a Masters of Science in Nursing and a minimum of five to seven years of related experience; requires WI State License as an Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber and Board Certification as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
