This Opportunity
WSP is seeking a Project Geologist to work in our Pittsburgh-area office located in Wexford, Pennsylvania. From this location, our team of geo-professionals provides services to clients in the oil & gas, transportation, mining, and infrastructure sectors, primarily in the Appalacian Basin. This position provides an opportunity to join a fast-paced team that provides solutions on geological, civil, and geotechnical engineering projects. The work entails a variety of office-related and outdoor “hands-on” activities, with a need to carefully follow instructions, document activities, solve problems, and provide proactive communication.
The selected candidate must be comfortable with the use of technology in the practice of geology and working in the field with project teams to support geologic and geotechnical investigations. This position will include opportunities for working both outdoors and in the office with experienced teams on a variety of projects such as linear alignments for pipelines, transportation corridors, and infrastructure siting. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated education or field experience in geomorphology, geohazards, and geology of the Appalachian Basin.
Your Impact
- Perform geologic field reconnaissance and mapping for the identification of geologic hazards
- Conduct subsurface field geologic exploration tasks including test pit explorations and support of drilling activities for the installation of groundwater monitoring wells and slope monitoring instrumentation
- Collect a range of field data, including from groundwater wells and slope monitoring instrumentation
- Interpret subsurface conditions and prepare exploration field notes
- Perform data compilation, report writing, GIS data analysis and management, geologic research, proposal writing, and other related duties to support project teams
- Safely perform work in the office and field; fieldwork may occur out-of-town in all seasonal weather conditions, while using equipment (with an ability to lift and move approximately 50 pounds without assistance) and safely operating vehicles on behalf of the company
- Work with cross-functional teams in executing project work.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, engineering geology, or geological engineering
- 3 to 5 year’s work experience
- Experience with oil & gas clients and geohazard projects in Appalachian Basin
- Demonstratable competence in understanding geomorphology and surface processes
- Computer skills and experience with industry standard commercial computer software including Microsoft Office and basic data management software
- Detail oriented with strong analytical skills and a positive attitude as well as the ability to work both independently and on teams
- Ability to be comfortable in remote settings and a willingness to perform a variety of tasks as needed to complete an assignment
- Familiar with geologic field skills such as field mapping and identification of geologic hazards
- Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.
- Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
- Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, and identify the most cost-effective responses that will minimize waste, prevent pollution, and conserve resources.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
- This role is subject to a client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy. As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests. A copy of this policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in geology, engineering geology, or related field
- Competence in understanding geomorphology, surface processesg, geohazards, and geology of the Appalachian Basin.
- Preferential consideration for demonstrated experience using GIS and remote sensing data (e.g., Lidar and aerial imagery) to identify geologic hazards using remote sensing data
- Experience with field-based data collection applications
- Experience with planning and conducting inspections and investigations on various aspects of the construction and design of facilities or structures, applying applicable regulations and policies
- Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training
