Job Description


Under general direction, the purpose of the position is to perform skilled to advanced craft-mechanical plumbing work in various installation, repair, maintenance and service tasks for the hospital. Employees in this classification function with considerable independence and latitude concerning methods, materials and priority of assigned work orders. Work areas include, but are not necessarily limited to, fixtures, water and waste water lines, portable hook-ups, lavatory systems and new construction. Position coordinated assigned project schedules in a manner to minimize disruption to hospital activities. Performs related work as directed.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Performs skilled to advanced craft-mechanical plumbing work in various installations, repair, and maintenance and service tasks for the hospital. Installs, maintains, services and/or repairs plumbing fixtures and apparatus for the hospital, i.e., water coolers, lavatory and kitchen fixtures and systems, water and waste water lines and new construction. Services or replaces components including but not limited to, valves, switches, pumps, traps, hose bibs, backflow devices, screens and lines. Coordinated assigned work orders in a manner to minimize disruption to routine hospital activities, to include planning complex and long term projects.

  • Uses test equipment safely and accurately.
  • Identifies problems and calls attention to management.

2. Receives work orders and coordinated project task; prepares material and labor estimates, determines equipment, materials, tools and supplies required per/job site. Fills out and maintains work orders and purchase orders for required materials, supplies and equipment; maintains daily activity logs, maintenance records concerning assigned equipment.

  • Identifies and corrects defect by using proper test equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance.

3. Ensures compliance with and adherence to applicable codes, ordinances, and building and safety standards regarding plumbing installation, service and repair activities.

4. Functions independently, as assigned, or provides lead worker guidance and assistance to work crews in more complex/difficult projects and installations. Work collaboratively and confers with contractor service providers, as applicable to assigned work orders.

5. Perform necessary calculations in preparing materials and work sites for installation, maintenance or repair, i.e., pipe dimensions, line layout, ditch and line grading, angles and distance.

  • Troubleshoots equipment in a timely manner.
  • Orders and replaces defective parts.
  • Ensures manufacturer’s specifications are maintained.

6. Operates various manual, electrical and gas-powered equipment and tools in performing assigned tasks, i.e., line cleaners, jack hammers, pipe threaders, concrete saws, back hoes, drills, pipe wrenches. Performs cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools and materials utilized per/work site, ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe equipment use and operation.

  • Performs repairs according to specifications.

7. Interprets blueprints, schematics and diagrams for installation or repair of new or existing plumbing systems.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics and diagrams.
  • Application of interpretations.

8. Responds to emergency or critical incidents in order to confine, resolve and/or prevent flooding or other hazardous conditions.

9. Participates in emergency drills and training.

10. Performs other related duties as assigned in order to meet the needs of the department.

  • Assists other department personnel as assigned.
  • Adhered to Departmental policies & procedures.

11. Actively supports University of Maryland Midtown Campus values and exhibits excellent Customer Service.

  • Interacts with all patients, visitors, physicians, employees and volunteers in a manner consistent with the Customer Service guidelines.

12. Remove snow and salts roads and walkways throughout the hospital campus as assigned.


Qualifications


High school graduate or equivalent. Must hold a State of Maryland Master Plumber’s license (or have 15 years experience in the field in lieu of licensure).

Experience:
Minimum 5 years plumbing experience (if licensed) or completion of a plumbing apprenticeship program. Unlicensed applicants must have 15 years relevant experience.

Contacts:
Frequent contact with Hospital personnel at all levels patients, visitors and outside vendors on a routine basis.

Physical Demands:
Constant walking, bending, stopping, and lifting. Must be capable of lifting and carrying 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:
Possible contact with blood and body fluids in waste water. Occasionally works in tight spaces, exposure to extreme temperatures, and working on ladders. Occasional moderate to heavy physical exertion, lifting and/or carrying heavy objects.

Hazards:
May be exposed to blood and body fluids, chemical contaminants and extremes in temperature and pressure.
