Job Description
PaleoWest is seeking Paleontological Field Technicians for upcoming renewable solar energy and development projects throughout California. Project locations include the Bay Area, Southern California, Central Coast, and the Central Valley. Your role will assist with field surveys, construction monitoring, fossil salvages, matrix washing and picking, and other field tasks as needed. You will also collect and record stratigraphic, lithologic, and paleontological data. You may also be required to assist with laboratory fossil preparation and identification, data entry and cataloging, along with data analysis and record searches. You should be available to work full-time on an as-needed basis.

Schedule: Availability to work full-time, as needed
Location: Field-based, San Diego, California (remote)
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in geology, paleontology, earth sciences, or a closely related field (e.g., environmental science, physical geography, or geoarchaeology)
  • Basic knowledge of field geology skills, measuring stratigraphic columns, and experience in recognizing fossils in the field
  • Must be proficient in modern field techniques, including use of GPS receivers and database management
  • Valid driver’s license, with the willingness to drive in “off-road” conditions
  • Willingness to travel with the potential for extended overnight hotel stays
  • Ability to endure adverse environmental conditions in remote locations, including hot and cold temperatures, precipitation, and challenging terrain for sustained durations
