General Position Summary: Supports the Fitness & Wellness Department’s holistic wellness programming by working with MAC members in groups, MAC competitive and recreational sports teams and with other departments such as Food & Beverage with the approval of the Fitness & Wellness Manager. In addition to group and interdepartmental project-based work.

Essential Job Functions/Major Responsibilities:
  • Serves as a nutrition resource for Fitness & Wellness staff, sport team coaches, trainers, and food service personnel.
  • Educates and mentors the interdepartmental staff as appropriate.
  • Stays up to date on nutrition trends, health & food issues, and sports nutrition. May work with internal club menu planning team to evaluate how these subjects might be applicable to the MAC community at large.
  • May acts as liaison with internal club menu planning team to create menus and nutrition analysis and other needs from the Food & Beverage Department with Wellness Supervisor approval.
  • Leads or co-leads Wellness & Nutrition related series and events (e.g. cooking classes, grocery store tours, food storage and food preparation, etc.)
  • Tracks and documents outcomes of nutrition services
  • Gives recommendations to existing or future programming to improve member satisfaction, engagement, and performance around nutrition.
  • Develops resources to support ongoing nutrition educational efforts.
  • Identifies and reports unsafe or hazardous work conditions. Reports all workplace injuries and illnesses to Human Resources.
  • Ensures confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Promotes the MAC mission and values in club activities and demonstrates the importance of providing quality service to members.
Secondary Functions:
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the Wellness Supervisor.
  • Participates in all club-related training classes and drills.
  • Abides by MAC dress code and all club policies and procedures.
Job Scope:
This job is part of the Wellness Department and supports holistic programming for the MAC membership as a whole or in a group or small group setting.

Interpersonal Contacts:
Contacts are made with others both inside and outside the organization. Internal contacts frequently include Department Supervisors and Managers and all department staff. External contacts may include members and contractors. Interactions tend to focus on information exchange, receiving or giving direction, or receiving or giving training.

Specific Job Skills:
  • Self-motivated and ability to work independently.
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and record-keeping skills.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, coaching and counseling skills.
  • Assesses and analyzes dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance (intake and expenditure) of athletes in the context of athletic performance and health.
  • Ability to counsel athletes and members on optimal nutrition for exercise training (match nutrition to training phases and goals), competition, and recovery from exercise, weight management, hydration, immunity, disordered eating, travel, and supplementation.
  • Addresses nutritional challenges to performance, such as food allergies, bone mineral disturbances, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron depletion, and iron-deficiency anemia.
  • Knowledge of eating disorder/disordered eating signs and symptoms.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of athletic governing bodies: e.g., National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), regarding banned drugs and restricted substances.
  • Knowledge of measurements of resting metabolic rate, energy expenditure, VO2max, and lactate threshold.
  • Proficiency in nutrition needs for youth and young athletes.
  • Competence, sound judgment, and self-control in working with difficult issues.
  • Physical ability to operate telephone, computer hardware/software including keyboard, and 10-key, to type at a minimum of 40 wpm and to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Exceptional decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency including a working knowledge of computer applications (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form with members, guests and employees.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members and staff.
  • Ability to perform the essential job functions.
Education and/or Experience:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Nutrition, Food and Nutrition, Nutrition Science or related area, granted from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university required or professional experience equivalent.
2. Master’s degree in Nutrition or Exercise Physiology highly preferred or professional experience equivalent.
3. Personal trainer and/or fitness instructor certification preferred.
4. 5 years’ experience in nutrition counseling or coaching required, preferably with emphasis on sports or performance nutrition.
5. Current AED/CPR/ First Aid required or must be obtained within first three months.
6. Current SafeSport certification required or must be obtained within first three months

Job Conditions:
  • Shared office space with other Fitness & Wellness staff.
  • Essential job functions require considerable sitting and walking.
  • Must be available occasionally to work irregular hours including holidays, evenings and weekends, as necessary
