Under supervision of the designated Technical Specialist/Supervisor or other senior laboratory associate, the Laboratory Technician will perform routine and non-routine laboratory procedures. Provides data for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease, also ensuring validity and accuracy of test results. May specialize as specified in one or more sections of laboratory medicine (Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Special Chemistry) according to department policies and professional standards. Associate degree as Medical Laboratory Technician or in a related scientific field. Must be certified by a nationally recognized accrediting agency as a Medical Laboratory technician, Clinical Laboratory Technician or be registry eligible for certification. ASCP is preferred.

One year satisfactory work experience as a MLT/CLT in an accredited clinical laboratory is preferred. Knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, equipment as well as proficiency in performing laboratory procedures at a level generally acquired during three to six months on-the-job orientation and training. Analytical ability necessary in order to organize work and resolve problems in running routine laboratory tests following standard technical principles and methods. Ability to meet regulatory, license and/or accreditation requirements.

Must be certified by a nationally recognized accrediting agency as a Medical Laboratory technician, Clinical Laboratory Technician or be registry eligible for certification. ASCP is preferred. If registry eligible for certification as a medical laboratory technician or clinical laboratory technician, certification is required within the first 12 months of employment.

Frequently exposed to blood and/or body fluids or potentially infective materials. Requires constant standing, hearing, speaking, vision, balancing and grasping, fingering, feeling and repetitive hand movement. Requires attention to detail despite frequent interruptions.
