The Long Term Acute Care (LTCH) Division of Sonoma Specialty Hospital is designed to provide care of medically complex patients who have experienced catastrophic illness and/or multi-system failure and are in need of intense rehabilitation services and an extended stay in an acute care setting. These patients usually come directly from a Short Term Acute Care Hospital (STCH) and are in need of vent weaning and acute rehabilitation services for a longer period of time to recover and return to their optimal level of health. The average length of stay (ALOS) of these patients is a range of 25-35 days which is a longer than average stay at a Short Term Acute Care Hospital. Care for these types of patients is provided by RNs, Respiratory Therapists, Wound Care Nurses, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech Therapists. Also a collaborative team of specialty physicians, psychologists, dieticians, and social workers will focus on an individualized goal for each patient to recover and reach their independence and optimum level of health.is a missing piece in the continuum of care within the health care system.

Full-Time Position

Job Summary:

The Employee Health Medical Assistant is responsible for providing health services to Sonoma Specialty employees, volunteer, non-employees (independent contractors, vendors, etc.).

Job Responsibilities:

  • Identifies and/or treats employees who become injured on the job.
  • Partners with Human Resources for worker’s compensation processes.
  • Executes health and safety programs for worker and worker populations.
  • Maintains thorough employee health records and reports to all appropriate regulatory agencies.
  • Conducts pre-employment screenings for all new hires and required annual health assessment for employee, volunteers, and non-employees vetted through human resources.
  • Works in partnership with Human Resources staff for the maintenance of employee health record file compliance.
  • Assists with the Workers Comp program at Sonoma Specialty in collaboration with human resources
  • Develops, coordinates and provides employee health educational training.
  • Works with our Infection Prevention nurse to incorporate the infection control program with the employee health program using recommendation outlined by CDC and other resources.
  • At all times ensures HIPPA and confidentiality are strictly maintained according to policy and procedure.
  • Performs preventative health measures, (i.e. physical, drug screening, tuberculosis screening, MMR, varicella, TDAP, Hepatitis B vaccinations)
  • Respiratory protection, and Influenza shots for hospital employees and volunteers as needed according to established guidelines of CDPH.

Education, Training and Licenses Required:

  • Current California Medical Assistant Certification required
  • BLS certification required
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Occupational Health Nurse certification preferred

Experience Required:

  • 3-5 years acute care experience preferred.
  • 1 year Employee Health nurse/ Occupational Health nurse preferred
  • 1 year medical office background preferred

Safety Requirements:

Employees are responsible for all aspects of the hospital safety and health program including compliance with safety rules and regulations, remedying unsafe working conditions, and for continuously practicing safety while performing duties. Sonoma Specialty Hospital policy prohibits employees with patient contact or those who prepare products for patient use from wearing artificial nails.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the position is frequently required to do the following:

  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and stand for sustained period of time.
  • Walk, push, pull, lift, carry objects from a lower to higher position or horizontally from position to position or otherwise move objects.
  • Feel sizes, shapes, temperatures, and textures by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips.
  • Express or exchange ideas orally and potentially loudly, accurately, or quickly.
  • Perceive the nature of sound with no less than a 40 db loss @ 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz with or without correction.
  • Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently.
  • Minimum standard of visual acuity with or without correction.
  • While worker may possibly be subjected to temperature changes, the worker is generally not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions as the work is predominantly inside.

Work Environment:

Able to adapt to sudden changes and willing to care for all types of patients regardless of age, ethnic background, religion, sexual preference, educational or economic status. Able to adapt to specific shift routine, i.e., sleep/wake pattern.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to hospital areas and general office environment. The work environment is a clean, well-lit, well-ventilated, and temperature controlled environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The hours of duty are lengthy and irregular.
