SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of the Building Principal and guidance of the Media Specialist, the Media Assistant performs a variety of duties involved in the operation and maintenance of the media center and in providing assistance to students and staff in use of media equipment, resources, and media materials.


Positions assigned to this classification differs from other positions within the paraprofessional occupational group in that the nature of the work does not require incumbents to have advanced training and knowledge of child development and learning required of other instructional support positions. The nature of the work is to provide student support services to students and staff and to assist in the operation of the media center in accordance with its set routines and operations. The focus of the job is to provide clerical support in the maintenance of media records, files and materials; to monitor and supervise students/classes utilizing the media center; to monitor the use of media equipment and computers in accordance with media center policies; to assist students in locating research materials; and to assist in circulation and media processing duties.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Open and close Media Center; straighten up, push in chairs, tidy areas, replenish supplies, etc.
  • Check in books, organize carts, shelve books, tidy shelves, replace displays
  • Promote special library weeks and events with displays and signage
  • Manage reservations for library classroom/C157 room reservations
  • Clean and maintain Media Center printer, tables, chairs, shelves
  • Collect and dispose of trash and recycling
  • Inventory/replace/store/organize MC supplies; create order lists
  • Inventory/replace/store/organize staff and student work supplies; create order lists
  • MC signage __ laminate, post schedules, various direction sheets, flyers, etc.
  • Individual projects as assigned
  • Greet students/staff coming into the MC; receive and check passes, sign-in, attendance, direct them to the best place to meet needs
  • Supervise students including PSEO, before/after school students, help to maintain a positive, academically-focused atmosphere
  • Train TAs on teaching assistant duties; supervise TAs and assign tasks Help staff and parents via phone calls with all manner of questions
  • Assist staff and visitors with individual needs
  • Assist students with book searches, book checkout, questions, etc.
  • Help students with various problems such as supplies, printing, etc.
  • Assist students with PowerSchool: usernames, passwords and schedules
  • Assist staff with access to the high school events calendar
  • Receive/send MC district mail
  • Communicate with custodians to stock MC cleaning supplies
  • Slack tech department for various tech needs
  • Receive and process new textbooks, including barcodes
  • Check in textbooks from prior years
  • Catalog textbooks for departments
  • Run textbook reports for teachers and/or departments
  • Assign Chromebooks to students using PowerSchool, One-to-One Plus and Brother printing system
  • Assist new students with Technology Permissions, usernames and passwords
  • Maintain/organize loaners and Chromebook repair area
  • Assist students with first-line tech help
    • Create tickets in One-to-One Plus system for Chromebook repair
    • Checkout loaners to students
    • Receive repaired Chromebooks
    • Email students that Chromebooks are ready for pickup
    • Swap repaired Chromebooks for loaners with students
    • Assist students with printing

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Use MackinVia Databases; show students/staff how to use it
  • Use SORA eBooks; show students/staff how to use it
  • Repair books
  • Shelve books, tidy displays
  • Help students and staff locate books, genres, etc.
  • Pull materials for incoming classes; reshelve materials when teachers are done
  • Use Destiny; show students/staff how to use Destiny Discover
    • Check in/out books for staff and students
    • Complete yearly inventory
    • Run reports
    • Receive and process in new books, including labels, covers, etc.
    • Create Destiny Collections for new books
    • Weed and process out old books
    • Use Destiny to track fines, overdue books, manage notices, etc.
    • Communicate with students, parents, regarding fines
    • Process Holds, communicate with students
    • Process InterLibrary Loans, checkout, mail, communication with patrons
    • Update patron records in Destiny
    • Upload pictures from Lifetouch into Destiny

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • No previous experience required.

  • No specific licenses or certification required to gain entry into the classification. District may require specific certifications, courses and/or licenses after hiring depending upon the specific job assignment, or needs of the District.
