The Mechanical Technician, working within the R&D Product Care Engineering team and closely with equipment engineers and designers, will help execute projects utilizing creative and innovative skills to ensure that Sealed Air packaging systems meet cost targets and comply with functional and technical specifications. The Mechanical Technician will work with engineers, designers, supply chain, manufacturing, and technical service, to validate commercial performance. The scope of work will encompass all phases of equipment product lifecycle from concept to continuous commercial support. The Mechanical Technician possesses a high level of mechanical aptitude with regard to packaging equipment, applications, and troubleshooting/repair. In addition, the Mechanical Technician is well-versed in electrical and pneumatic controls along with theory and comprehension of electrical and pneumatic schematics. Primary Responsibilities
  • Equipment Prototyping/Assembly – Responsible for assembling equipment both from drawing packages and verbal instruction. This will include both mechanical equipment features and assembly of electrical control cabinets and corresponding electrical component wiring. Responsible for basic on-the-spot prototyping and design improvements, which include a thorough knowledge of shop tools and machinery.
  • Equipment Testing – Participate in thorough testing and application validation of equipment. Key attributes of testing will include hardware test set-up, assistance with data collection, root cause analysis, and corrective action.
  • Customer Support – Provide both internal and external (field) customer support at an expert level, i.e. level above that of an operator and basic maintenance personnel. Conduct formal equipment operation and maintenance training. Proficient in equipment functionality/knowledge, as well as application knowledge. Strong communication skills will be a requirement, especially with training exercises.
  • Sales Support – Provide expertise in a broad range of packaging equipment functionality and associated applications. Knowledge of both Sealed Air Product Care equipment and common industry-associated equipment. Key support activities will include sales/customer demos, and trade show support. Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in Technology/Machine shop trade or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on equipment experience
  • Ability to meet technical challenges with creative and innovative solutions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities
  • Possess a strong “hands-on” aptitude with regards to equipment and/or mechanisms
  • Proficient in basic machine shop tools and equipment
  • Promote a safe work environment by observing all safety standards and wearing all personal protective equipment.
  • Perform bench or floor assembly and make various accurate fitting and adjustments of parts, and components and complete units as required, assigned, or directed. Install interrelated pneumatic, electrical/electronic parts, controls, or accessory equipment to make proper and/or operational arrangements. Conduct or assist in testing required. Troubleshoot and diagnose problems. Confer and discuss difficulties with engineering and other department personnel. Remedy problems within the scope of assigned responsibilities. Suggest an alternate course of action, prototype modification or part, component, or machine change to avoid production-related problems or to meet or improve operational performance. Perform re-work and repair modifications required or as directed to remedy or avoid problems.
  • Excellent attendance and reliability. Able to work overtime and attend meetings, training, etc. outside normal shift
  • Working familiarity with Email
  • Working familiarity with Microsoft Office products
  • SolidWorks experience is a plus
  • Requires up to 5% travel
