SMSI, LLC is seeking Engineers and Designers (Mechanical, Electrical Controls) for work in Albuquerque, NM to support Computer Aided Design and Drafting support for the Pulsed Power Sciences Engineering and Design Group in support of Pulsed Power Research and Development for various pulsed power systems including Next Generation Pulsed Power Technology, the Z machine, the Z Beamlet Laser, and diagnostics associated with the Pulsed Power Sciences program in the Pulsed Power Sciences Center in Sandia National Laboratories.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as a key member of an integrated design team to create and document mechanical designs related to the broad scope of pulsed power systems mechanical components.
- Apply creative solution to produce 3D CAD (in Sandia s version of Creo and Windchill or SolidWorks and Windchill) designs of pulsed power systems, structures, and components.
- Research, design, and analyze engineering and technology solutions.
- Produce high-quality engineering drawings of complex assemblies and precision components in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards.
- Adapt to evolving design requirements while meeting safety, compliance, security, and schedule imperatives.
- Create content and present engineering design deliverables at review and status meetings.
- Follow defined standards and procedures.
- Perform assignments that are not completely standardized or prescribed.
- Exercise initiative, judgment and knowledge as required in area of responsibility.
- Receives initial instructions from a supervisor. Technical work is checked upon completion.
- The position requires teamwork skills to effectively interact with other engineers located in remote offices to support the overall project.
Requirements:
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment consisting of diverse and multi-disciplinary scientists, engineers, and technicians.
- Knowledge of and experience applying the fundamentals of mechanical engineering and design disciplines to complex design problems.
- Demonstrated proficiency using either Creo or Solidworks CAD system for the creation of 3D models and drawings if mechanical engineer or designer.
- Demonstrated proficiency using electronic PDM system (Windchill) for configuration management of CAD data and drawings.
- Fundamental knowledge of fabrication processes including machining, welding, and metal forming.
- Expert knowledge and demonstrated ability applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to designs and drawings.
- Demonstrated experience applying principles of precision machine design.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Experience designing and implementing mechanical or control systems, structures, and components at industrial plants, and/or large experimental facilities.
- Demonstrated experience designing and building particle accelerators, pulsed power machines, or high-power microwave systems. Relevant experience includes high gradient components, high voltage insulators, vacuum systems, precision alignment systems, equipment support stands, and dielectric fluid and compressed gas systems.
- Designers: Associates degree (AAS) in Mechanical Engineering Technologies or equivalent program AND 6-10 years or more of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Engineers: Bachelor's degree (BS) in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program AND 6-10 or more years of related experience.
- US citizenship required (contract prohibits dual citizenship)

Requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods at a computer workstation.
