Job description
Performs support to shop operations performing fuel system operation and maintenance, parts room operation assistance, and general skilled mechanical work on vehicles and equipment; performs maintenance work to roadways and roadsides to keep them safe and in good repair according to standards; performs related work as required.
Position is opened until filled, applications will be review when submitted.
- Repairs and services equipment including, but not limited to, trucks, graders, plows, tractors, dozers, excavators, as well as paving, seal-coating, and similar self-propelled equipment
- Repairs and services tools and equipment including, but not limited to, mowers, jack hammers, saws, and power tools
- Repairs equipment using cutting torch, electric welder, and gas welder as required
- Changes tires on equipment;
- Repairs damaged/deflated tires as necessary
- Supports parts room personnel by maintaining tire and related repair inventory
- Transports equipment to project sites utilizing various trucks and trailers as required
- Maintains cleanliness of shop and working order of shop equipment
- Operates and maintains fuel systems and associated systems
- Schedules and performs minor repairs to fuel and lubricant handling equipment
- Researches and keeps informed on oil ratings and new engine lubricant requirements
- Ensures proper fuel octane blends and cetaine levels, using additives when necessary
- Receives, stores, and distributes parts and supplies to internal and external customers
- Maintains computerized inventory control system of parts, supplies, and materials for Department
- Notifies appropriate staff when items need to be reordered
- Assists in conducting inventory of items in shops and at shop sites as necessary
- Picks-up parts, supplies, and materials from area vendors as required
- Operates communications equipment between shop and field personnel to communicate and relay information as necessary
- Receives telephone and radio calls, determines nature of incident or emergency, and notifies appropriate authorities
- Communicates and relays information to supervisors and field crews
- Performs building and grounds maintenance
- Operates heavy-duty snowplow trucks to plow, sand, and salt roadways and roadsides for snow and ice control to keep them safe for travel; performs post-storm clean up
- Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights-of-way, lots, and yards
- Applies aggregate and/or anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on roadways under slippery conditions; removes ice and other frozen materials from culverts
- Prepares and inspects winter maintenance equipment - maintains snow plow equipment, cutting edges, and spreaders; and cleans equipment post-storm
- Performs preventive maintenance on highway equipment, including greasing, changing oil, performing regular thorough cleaning, and minor repairs; maintains snow plow equipment, cutting edges, and spreaders; and cleans equipment post-storm
- Operates, as adequately trained and qualified, a variety of equipment including, but not limited to:
- Brush/chain/concrete saws, compressors, crack sealers/routers, forklift/telehandler, hand and tractor mowers, hydroseeders, jack hammers, kick-off brooms, mulch machines, screeners, skid steer loaders
- Signing-related equipment (i.e. table saws, sanders, lifting boom with and without post-hole auger, sign roller, and sign lettering machines)
- Single- and multi-axle trucks in combination with plows (front, underbody, and wing) with automatic or multi-speed manual transmissions, tanks, trailers, spreaders
- Performs other related duties as assigned
- Five (5) years of training or paid, full-time work experience as a full performance level mechanic on modern heavy trucks and/or construction equipment
- Availability and willingness to work significant overtime as requested
- Valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver's License without "L" (air brake) restriction and with "N" (tank vehicles) endorsement and no "L" restriction (air brakes) and acceptable driving record; required within six (6) months of hire
- Must possess and maintain certification as a Forklift Operator within three (3) months of hire
- Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of the following pre-employment requirements:
- Criminal background check
- Pre-employment physical, with 75-pound lifting ability
- Drug screening
- As a condition of continued employment, employees are subject to random and post-accident drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment
- Must furnish own full set of tools at start of employment and maintain own set of tools including: hammers, screwdrivers, socket wrenches, hand wrenches, both American and metric measure
