PURPOSE OF JOB: To perform preventive maintenance, major and minor repairs on transit buses, trucks, automobiles, related equipment, building and grounds as well as additional duties assigned.

CLASS SUMMARY: A senior skilled mechanic with a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of the process involved with major and/or minor heavy-duty diesel repair. One who would be able to supervise, assist and instruct all shop mechanics and service workers in various types of vehicle repairs. Mechanic position reports to maintenance supervisor or designee and is safety sensitive classified. Must submit to post offer pre-employment drug and alcohol screen and participate in ongoing random drug and alcohol testing program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Organize and assigns work and/or tasks to mechanics or other maintenance department personnel. Repairs transit buses, trucks, automobiles and related equipment to ensure safe operation of equipment. Occasionally operates forklift and bobcat with attachments.

2. Maintains work orders, repair log, defect cards, yard sheet and other statistical information relative to repair work.

3. Starts buses to prepare for morning pullout; operates all wheelchair lifts for performance evaluation and repairs.

4. Inspects, troubleshoots, adjusts and repairs/replaces basic systems including, but not limited to, lighting, electrical, brakes, suspension, air conditioning, steering, tires, air system, body panels’ interior/exterior, seat cushions/inserts, ad racks, engine and transmission components and electronics, and wheelchair/ramp equipment and locations.

5. Coordinates set up of emergency road calls and repairs. Performs tow truck operations when necessary.

6. Responsible for closing and securing buildings as required.

7. Cleans own work area after each job is completed.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

- Assists in the training of vehicle repairs.

- Clean, fuel and park buses when the need arises.

- Order, locate, and put away parts and / or supplies.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

- Must be able to pass DOT physical, which is a requirement for CDL Class A license, and demonstrate ability to do the following:

- Heavy work with exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

- Physical activity includes, but is not limited to: lifting, pushing, pulling parts on vehicles; crouching, kneeling, stooping to work on brakes and other vehicle parts; hearing to detect engine noises; reaching below waist, waist to shoulder and above shoulder to repair vehicles; rolling tires; turning screws and bolts; using chisels, pliers, ratchets, screwdriver, and other tools; utilizing repetitive movements to turn screws and bolts, snow shoveling, hooking up wrecker to bus both by hooks and tow bar (150lbs), jarring and vibrations of tire gun, plowing of snow and bobcat use. Uses hoist, jacks and related mechanical equipment to lift and align heavy parts such as motors, tires and related equipment.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

- Perform mathematical calculations.

- Troubleshoot vehicle maintenance problems.

- Perform vehicle repairs or preventive maintenance inspections.

- Read and understand basic technical publications, wiring schematics, etc.

- Understand and practice all safety rules and OSHA regulations.

- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers.

- Follow written and oral instructions.

- Write clear documentation of work performed.

- Use computer troubleshooting/diagnosing software.

Knowledge of:

- Basic principles, practices and techniques of repairing motor vehicles.

- Basic methods, tools, and equipment used in automotive mechanics.

- Safety practices related to automotive work.

- Minor engine tune-up work and vehicle lubrication procedures.

- Safety inspection procedures and techniques.

- Understand basic computer functions.

ENVIRONMENT CONDITIONS

Duties will be performed indoors, outdoors and in all weather conditions. Must be able to withstand environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, oil and grease, extreme temperatures, noise and vibrations from jarring (tire removal and snow plowing, bobcat, etc.), fumes and odors, wetness and humidity. Employee may also be exposed to mechanical, chemical as well as traffic hazards.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

- High School Graduate or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

- Five years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, transit buses, heavy equipment, or related equipment.

- Substitution of any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to meet the requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a valid State of Georgia Class A Commercial Driver's License with a P endorsement, combination vehicle endorsement and air brake endorsement or the ability to obtain one within six months of employment; good driving and police record.

Must possess own required tools.
