Job description
The Librarian performs daily technical and clerical library functions to meet the information needs of library users. They have full responsibility for obtaining needed materials not owned by the library, including contributing to materials orders and retrieving interlibrary loans. The Librarian provides initial assistance and direction to library users and refers to Manager/Director or other possible sources as appropriate. They help manage daily library operations and oversee the work of the Library Student Workers in the Manager/Directors absence.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists university personnel in retrieving information in the library: assisting students, faculty, and staff in locating materials on shelves, scanning chapters, or retrieving requested articles or publications, among other requests.- Performs circulation functions: checking in/out materials, putting materials on hold, managing renewals, and understanding specific collection policies within the library.
- Performs cataloging functions: creating or importing records, checking for accuracy, and re-cataloging materials as needed. Create and print labels and properly sticker/stamp books.
- Assists users with library equipment use: computers, printers, scanners, and photocopiers. Refers additional technology queries to IT department.
- Responds to telephone, in-person, and electronic requests for information as appropriate.
- Offers instruction on a one-on-one basis with students, or in classroom settings, on various Library services such as: conducting research, locating citation information, and utilizing e-resources and databases. Instruction may be done in-person or remotely.
- Supervises and oversees work of Library Student Workers. Refers questions or issues to Manager/Director when appropriate.
- Works on collection development by ordering new materials and researching potential resources. Monitors and tracks levels of supplies at desk.
- Staffs the Library desk at both our Chicago Wicker Park or Oak Brook campuses as needed. Preference for location will be taken into consideration in assignment of shifts. Must have reliable transportation to either campus.

Education and/or Experience
- ALA Accredited Masters Degree in Library and Information Science required.
- Familiarity with interlibrary loan procedures, state policies, and copyright laws.
- Must be able to meet shifting deadlines and manage changing priorities with professional, courteous demeanor.
- Must be flexible in location of work (Chicago, IL or Oak Brook, IL, depending on weekly coverage needs). At this time we are only offering in-person services.
- Preferred 1+ years experience with academic library settings and procedures.
- Preferred experience information management systems (DOCLINE and OCLC WorldShare), internet navigation, and generic office hardware.
- Preferred familiarity with EBSCO and Ovid database formats
- Preferred familiarity with medical terminology and MeSH.
Language and Computer Skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present complex information to varying levels of individuals throughout the organization.
- Must be computer and digitally literate, with Microsoft Office products familiarity preferred.
- Must be able to read and comprehend the English language in digital and physical books, databases, etc. Additional language speaking, writing, and comprehension preferred.
