The Mass General Brigham Sports initiative launched in 2020 with the goal of creating a regional, national, and international hub for Sports Medicine and related Specialties. The Mass General Brigham Center for Sports Performance Research (CSPaR) program is expanding within the MGB Sports Medicine initiative and is aimed at providing world-class training for the everyday athlete. The CSPaR service is a highly specialized team of clinicians aimed at providing coordinated and comprehensive training and care for the professional, masters, collegiate, high school, amateur, and recreational athlete.
The CSPaR Lead Injury Recovery Specialist will serve as a key collaborator for the training and care of the athlete/client. The CSPaR Lead Injury Recovery Specialist will provide a core set of clinical expertise and will work collaboratively with other team members on a multi-disciplinary approach and programmatic training. The Lead Injury Recovery Specialistwill be responsible for athletic assessments and plan of training implementation for athletes/clients within CSPaR. The CSPaR Lead Injury Recovery Specialist position requires strong interpersonal and leadership skills and is expected to engage on research and collaboration projects, including but not limited to, participating and presenting at professional conferences, meetings, round table discussions, and possible educational opportunities. The CSPaR Lead Injury Recovery Specialist should be comfortable with coaching all levels of athletes and all sporting activities, including but not limited to, tactical athletes (e.g., military, police, fire, EMS). Certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) is required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Relevant responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Clinical Responsibilities:
- Conducts athlete/client injury assessments.
- Oversees performance training and recovery plans for both team and individual training.
- Provides program development for 1-on-1, small groups, and large groups (team) that is science/research-based.
- Provides 1-on-1 coaching, small group coaching, and large group (team) coaching.
- Instructs and coaches on proper exercise technique and equipment usage.
- Collects and documents data regarding recovery and training progress
- Maintains Sports Science database and Athlete management System.
- Manages and maintains technology-based equipment used in athlete performance. Maintains an excellent rapport and effective working relationship with CSPaR equipment suppliers/vendors.
- Maintains excellent rapport and effective working relationships with the CSPaR Team and MGB Sports Medicine department including other clinicians, managers, administration, and outside consultants.
- Interprets, evaluates, and utilizes pertinent current research related to sports and injury recovery, and presents such to CSPaR, MGB team conferences or MD/PhD correspondence.
- Participates in client satisfaction and problem solving with sports performance and customer service issues.
- Serves as a sports performance consultant, resource, and lecturer for health care providers, students, and the public.
- Performs other duties as requested by management staff such as client check-in at off-site clinics and calling clients to address concerns and questions.
Management Responsibilities:
- Collects and reports productivity, training outcomes, and other data that is necessary for quality improvement and reports to CSPaR Director of Sports Performance.
- Collects, interprets, and reports sports science data.
- Performs other duties, including administrative duties, as requested by management staff.
Educational Responsibilities:
- Develops and presents group education classes, in specialized areas to hospital staff, professional organizations, the community at large, media and/or contract institutions.
- Engage on research and collaboration projects, including but not limited to, participating and presenting and professional conferences, meetings, round table discussions, and possible educational opportunities.
- Develops and expands professional proficiency in selected or assigned areas of specialty (example: recovery, sports science, tactical, eSports, speed, agility, power).
- Participates in mandatory hospital in-services (OSHA, safety, respiratory, fire, confidentiality).
Qualifications:
- Doctor of Physical Therapy degree preferred
- Licensed (or eligible to be licensed) to practice physical therapy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
- At least 5 years of relevant experience
- Titleist Performance Institute certification a plus
- CPR Certification a plus
Skills/Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of human anatomy and exercise physiology as it relates to sports specific recovery training
- Advanced knowledge of examination and evaluation for broad range of impairments requiring physical therapy intervention
- Knowledge of sports biomechanics.
- Must be able to read, write and speak English
- Must have basic computer skills to be able to use various computer programs/systems within the CSPaR
- Computer skills in programs relevant to job duties, including Microsoft Office Suite, database management and programming. Experience with Smartabase is preferred.
- Has the ability to quickly learn other information systems used within the institution (i.e. Electronic Medical Record system and Athlete Management System)
- Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to structure and lead discussions.
- Capable of juggling multiple tasks and competing priorities and work in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and delegate responsibilities
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time (greater than 4 hours).
- Ability to lift over 50 pounds.
Working Conditions:
- Collaborative work environment with activity and needs across several locations in the greater Foxborough, MA area
- May require domestic and international travel
- The work may require the lifting of heavy objects and patients, as well as exposure to potentially infective material
- Working in an active training area with high velocity objects, heavy weights, and athletes running can be expected. Hazards present from exposure to liquid nitrogen vapors, magnesium sulfate (epsom salt), or disinfecting agents are minimized when safety precautions are strictly adhered to
Supervisory and Fiscal Responsibilities:
- Must have proven ability to manage resources of up to five recovery staff at CSPaR.
- Assist with procurement of funding for ongoing and future research projects
